Philthy-
James Jamerson may be the all around most tasteful bassist I have ever heard.......forget the rest, he was playing acoustic bass in the late 50's with more soul than the rest you mentioned ever knew existed. A truly great musician who could probably have played with any symphony going, at least according to a few people I knew way back when that worked with him. Don't let the magazines get you caught up in the equipment thing; its' all in the hands extending from your soul. He truly exhibited the 3 T's: timing, taste, & tone. The only bassists I ever heard that might be up there in his class, besides Ray Brown, were Walter Page, Ron Carter & Richard Davis. Davis & Carter both play more advanced ideas, but do it from the heart. Page was a fourth of the finest rhythm section known to man. It don't get any tighter than what he & the other three put together. There ain't nothing no better when the pocket is tight.
