a few of us met up over at Ban's shop again last night.. we didn't do much chopping, other than some water bottle cutting, which is a lot of fun... don't mind the hat hair..:D

i did however get a cool, hands on, lesson on convexing knives from Ban... it was a lot tof fun... i really enjoyed.. Ban has a nice KMG belt sander... that thing is awesome...

many thanks once again Ban... that was really cool of you to help me out..

since it was my first time and i didn't really have any knives with me, that i was willing to experiment on.. may father in law, gave me the thumbs up to try it out on his Kershaw Outkast... it's got a 10 in D2 blade, that is recurved... the factory edge was horrible.. i had to remove quite a decent amount of steel..

anyhow... it turned out pretty darn nice... especially for a first time...the thing cuts like a light saber now...:D

cheers... mike

I thought you had to remove the platen to convex...It looks like you are doing it with the platen in place.

Have I been lead astray?

Cool stuff! That edge looks great.

What grit did he have on his sander? Was only one belt used?

Thanks.

Nice!! Send me an email the next time you're coming up to san jose, would love to drop in if it's cool! If Ban's willing to teach more people, I could bring my khuk down.

Excellent! Now I'm gonna speak for others when I ask for better specifics on how you did this.

Nice job Mike, …nice photos too.

Re-profiling a big D2 blade can be quite a challenge,

…a belt grinder is really the best way to tackle it. :)

wow, nice job! those outcasts look like cool knives, but i would be concerned about the size/shape of the handle for big hands and really long fingers.

man that looks great. those are some pro pics you got there mike. who took those....lol. I had fun watching you guys fix sharp things....

many thanks fo rthe comments folks... it was a good time indeed and a great experience...:D

convexed outcast is a great knife, one of the best IMO.

i did the convex on mine by hand but that still looks great. wait till you see her with the finish off, you'll reach for it every time :D

I tried my first convex on my Outcast while my legs were healing and buckled a bit running it up the blade. Yours looks tons better than mine does. I think it is a really good introductory level chopper. My factory edge was obtuse but could still chop a 1" manilla rope.
