"Guilty Pleasure" Knives...

I loved and used my huntsman for things it was never designed for as a kid. Never abuse - we used the saw on it to cut down small saplings and cut through 2x8s as my friends and I built a treehouse in the suburban Oregonian wilderness. I'm glad to see another huntsman fan!

Heck yeah, man. I couldn't count, nor remember how many treeforts we managed to put up with that as our only tool. I mail-ordered it from the back of a "Boys Life" magazine if I remember correctly. Good times.

Oh man, I spent hours staring at the display of SAKs in an REI before deciding on the one.
I remember it had to have a big knife blade (I had come from a 58mm minichamp), a saw (like the one on my friend's SAK), and scissors. The huntsman fit perfectly, and it became my grail knife. I spent so many hours in that tiny strip of woods across the street, with the small old hammer that I found near the "fort" and my knife, maybe a hatchet if I had one, and some rope. For some reason, I thought that rope would be crucial to my afternoon in the woods, if I needed to quickly repel down a tree or climb up the face of a cliff. Good memories, I loved those long afternoons.

Irona,

I actually removed the coating and sanded the bejeezus out of that knife to smooth the finish and then vinegar etched the blade. And yes the "hamon" is visible. The harder steel darkened more than the softer steel. I need to make wooden handle scales for it and a nice leather sheath

Well I'm not proud of this, but since you asked. I'll probably get a lot of shit, but I'm used to it. :-P

Back in my very young days, before I knew pretty much anything about knives, I picked up one of these. I was heading out on my first deployment and, while I knew the advertising itself was total BS, the knife itself looked very strong and well...tacticool. *rolls eyes at my younger self.* I think that was my first experience on Blade Forums, which definitely had all negative comments about the company. I listen to the advice on here much better now and have some high quality knives as a result.

To be fair, this knife actual served me well downrange. Although it was far bigger than I needed, it handled everything I threw at it. Even cut a gas tank out of a car once (long story), something I am sure my SOG Seal Pup Elite would not have handled very well.

Still have it lying around somewhere. It will probably come in handy during the Zombie Apocalypse. :D
Is that before or after deployment photo?
I can see why it appealed to you. It looks like it would scare the crap out of anyone unlucky enough to have it pulled on them.
Hey it's not worse than my 3 inch thick knife with spoon, fork etc I was so proud to own as a kid in the 70's.

None of these features overcome my guilt for 3 things...
1. 8cr13mov. What more can I say. Ugh
2. Made in China. The back of the blade looks so nice until you see that ubiquitous mark.

Welcome to the forum! :) Also, 1 & 2 are exactly how I feel about my Fossil; I don't mind 8Cr13MoV, but I'm no where close to being in love with it, and while my knife isn't stamped with "Made in China", I highly suspect it's not made in the US/NA (which is always a bonus for me when any product is).

I like cheap flea market knives sometimes if they have a graphic on them that appeals to me. Can be a very poorly built knife but if it has for instance playing cards on it and the price is cheap, I will snatch it up.

Haha that is awesome. Gallio movies are spaghetti-thrillers that heavily influenced horror-slasher movies. They are known for having point-of-view shots of the killer, and the killer always uses some kind of blade but also has style- usually wearing a coat and leather gloves.

I legit thought you were making a reference to those haha.

Maybe I saw it when I was a little kid and can't remember. I'll have to watch those. Thanx for the info.

It was this one (Cold Steel Spartan) for folders, until I sold it several years ago. Totally over-the-top blade, but so far it's the only folder I ever felt like I could chop with.

Gerber 06 auto and M-Tech "Twist" balisong.

A very practical "guilty pleasure" knife, a Himalayan Imports CAK - the big one in the pic. Nothing survives this thing.

Wow. Never noticed it until now and maybe everybody knows it already and is going "duh". :-D

The JQKA looks like JOKA as in Joker. Which is a card which could be used instead of J Q K or A in some games.
Coincidence?

I wanted a "sharpened prybar"

and then I had it. Pried with it, threw it at trees (breaking the handles) and now it stays as my ice breaking fixed blade, or wood stump prying knife

It is "Unknown surgical steel" and titanium coated, as per the blade's markings and writings

I've always wanted a Gerber Propel Downrange, but unfortunately, the local knife store only stocks the Gerber Propel and as much as I want it, $200+ for 420HC and G10 would DEFINITELY make that a guilty pleasure knife... :/

Haha, you are very observant. I never noticed that before. Hmmmm

SAKs and Opinels are pure inexpensive fun, I just got all these for $30. They're like candy, guilty cheap pleasure you can have from time to time

great for spending some time modding and tuning them up without caring if you mess up!

I have these two. I chased these two knives down for years and now they are finally sitting on my knife shelf......
They will both see some use though! :D

Definitely a guilty pleasure is the Cold Steel XL Espada G-10 I bought a couple years ago( 17" open  ) . No real practical reason to have it, but it sure is fun to whip out now and then for kicks and giggles. I've used it as a Watermelon knife, carved a turkey, and a couple other things.
