Speaking of a variety of knives seen here in the WSS forum, this is one of my favorite knives. It just plane works, stays sharp, and is surprisingly light for how big it is. Choppers may not be everyone's thing, and neither may the semi-tactical knives, but I can't argue with success. Now I looked at practically every production knife on the market and this was the only one that fit my bill. I've had it for quite a while and don't regret a thing. For all the bush-craft/Bark River fans, avert your eyes now. Bonus points for anyone who can identify the knife/maker without help.

What steel is it?

N690, claimed 58RC. Takes a real nice edge and holds it pretty damn well. Shines up real nice too, not quite stainless tough, but pretty close. I've beat the hell out of it batoning green wood, about 6" logs, for firewood. Clears saplings and brush easily. Makes a pretty good draw knife for de-barking as well. Cuts real deep when chopping. The working face is a full flat grind and works very well despite the 1/4 inch spine, which is great to beat on.

For gruntinhusaybah, yeah I do like it, a lot, but I think most of their other knives are overblown mall-ninja gear. This is my diamond in the rough, I don't mind their light-duty folders though, but I can't justify the cost as they have gotten much more expensive and are just too similar to other stuff out there now.

Fox is offering up something pretty radical made of the same stuff too.

I really like the look of the Extrema Ratio kukris, KH and KS - it's on my wish list. Glad you enjoy it - no need to feel guilty at all!

Do you find the handle comfortable with prolonged chopping? I tend to wonder about the shape and, more, about it being rubber and causing friction in the hand. OR maybe you wear gloves with it?

I have a couple of pocket chain saws and I was using one to fell a tree about 6-7 inches at the base. Well when the tree fell it pinned my saw in the cut so I used the ER to chop through the tree about 3 feet up so I could get my saw back. I took a while, no hot spots, the vibration can get to you after that much chopping though. I also use a braided para cord lanyard which I loop over the back of my hand and onto my thumb for added security. I don't mind the handle at all.

This brings up another good point. I turned most of that tree into fire wood. The pocket saw, ultimate survival I think, was infinitely faster than trying to chop through the same size logs. The Kukri however did a superb job debarking the tree and splitting the green logs. A good pair.

I really like it. Kind of reminds me of my beloved  Machax.

Who would have thought it? Me being a bushcraft/Bark River fan, and all! :D
