Guilty Pleasures? Knife related only, please and thanks.

My guilty pleasure used to be cheap fixed-blades.

Back when I had lots of disposable income I would buy cheap fixed-blades, try them out, using and abusing them, and occasionally find one of good quality that I really liked. I could afford more expensive knives, my daily-carry FB cost $300, but I got an odd thrill out of buying the cheaper knives and sometimes being surprised.

Below are four keepers. Two cost $40, one cost $30, the one in the bottom pick cost $8 (closeout sale) and I liked it so much it became a daily-carry/work-knife. Some that I bought got sent back without testing, and some ended up in the garbage.

I never judge a knife by the price, or the steel type. I judge it by how it performs my needed tasks, and how much I like it.

I still feel drawn to cheap fixed-blades, and will occasionally see ones that spark my desire to buy. I was looking at a few just yesterday. If I still carried a FB (and still had money to burn) I might buy them, but I don't, I don't need all the fixed-blades I already own.

Hmm. I'm not a super huge fan of liner locks -- partly because I had one (the Benchmade) close on my fingers, but I have these (in fact, I have two Tenaciouses because I wore the liner lock out on one...). Oh, and I really like the Utilitac II.

I own a ye who shall not be named G. FH922 and it see's much abuse in my weekly in my rotation.

My guilty pleasure is that I genuinely think it's one of the most practical designs I've seen in the last couple of years.

I never feel particularly guilty about it (probably because I'm shameless 😉), but there are a lot of (for me) impractical knives that I get just because they're cool. Picked up a Reate Exo-K recently that DEFINITELY falls into that category!
Yeah... I'm guilty of the "impractical purchase" as well...Arrakis 906A.jpg

The count for me is three Rough Ryders, so far. I'm not that hung up on country of origin or steel flavors, I like that RR is offering modern traditional versions of classic pocket knife patterns at prices that aren't obscene (looking at you, GEC).

I have a couple "inspired by" knives from the overseas website. That's all I'm going to admit.

Yeahhhhhhhh - So many things I hate. Bricklike handle, thick blade, half serrated, saber ground, fuller, D2….

And yet, I LOVE this damn knife. It just works. I beat the crap out of it and it continues to GSD. Here’s a pic of when it was new:

This is the OG model. I handled one at a Bass Pro Shop a long while back and laughed at it. Said I’d never own one. Brick of a handle with a D2 turd of a blade was my impression.

When I got the opportunity to buy this one I went into it with an open mind. I let the knife show me what it can do. I didn’t dwell on all the stuff I thought I would dislike - I just used it. I’ve eaten a lot of crow over this one. Absolutely love it, and trust it. Puts a big smile on my face every time I carry it.

Spyderco knives look like dead birds. They are ugly. For some reason they keep flapping their way into my daily carry rotation. I love them. I abuse them. I love abusing them. When they stare back up at me with that sad, swollen eye, all dull and defeated, I am satisfied. I smite the Spyderco! Remorseful, I sharpen. It's a cycle.

Spydercos are my guilty pleasure too. All those variations and steels.

I once asked my wife why women have so many shoes, and it turns out it's a combinatorial problem. You can have a lot of shoes, but that doesn't mean you have a lot of shoes that match the color and formality level of each of your outfits.

Can't really criticize, after saying things to myself like "yes, I have an Endura 4, but do I have one in K390?"
