One of our local radio stations has a history of playing songs on their morning program that they like to call "Guilty Pleasures" The DJ defines a guilty pleasure as bad music that you listen to(and enjoy it) in the privicy of your own home, but you would NEVER admit to any of your friends or co-workers that you like the song. Much less listen to this music in public. Songs by the Partridge Family are good examples of guilty pleasures. All music by the Archie's would also fit. Any Beatles music sung by William Shatner is at the top of the list.

So, the question is this, when it comes to blades, what are your guilty pleasures? A cheap SAK clone maybe? How about that China knockoff you own?

Mine? A lockback folder made by Cutco. IIRC it's a #1891

A cheap Craftsman box cutter, those aluminum handled ones that come in alot of colors. It sees a ton of use, for some reason it's the first thing I reach for when I need something cut, even if I got a nice folder right next to it. Maybe, subconsciously, my brain is trying to preserve my good blades as much as possible?

I readily admit to liking the current Chinese-made Schrade Old Timer knives. They're just decent knives at a low price. They're biggest negative is the brand name. People continue to compare them to the original US-made Old Timers.

The small SOG Flash I. It has so many things that I don't care for in a knife, flimsy scales, serrated blade, and assisted opening. I bought it as a small edc many years ago before I really knew anything about knives. Once I learned more about quality knives and started collecting in earnest, I realized that the SOG really pretty basic and unspectacular.

Flash forward (no pun intended) about 5 years, and I had thought that I had lost that knife. By then my collection was going pretty strong so I never used it, but for some reason, I was very upset about losing it. One day while digging through one of my backpacks, my wife found the knife, when she told me I was ecstatic. I still haven't carried that knife since she found it, but am still thrilled to have it back nonetheless. You could say that that SOG Flash I is my guilty pleasure.

If I hold my hands up promise not to shoot :D . the bear grylls ultimate survival knife . yes I know its crap. Its not full tang . the steel is crap . the fire steel falls out . and as for the sharpener you would get better results from using a rock . I got 1 when they first came out . just out of curiosity . but when all's said and done I have had some fun with it in the garden . I wouldn't take it any were els though :D

My Kershaw JYD gets a workout sometimes when I've got some rough stuff to do...digging out weeds, whatever. It works wonders, but doesn't look so hot.

Okay so I'll admit this one... ;)
I worked for a company for over 15 years when the company was sold and I was being RIF'd.
A friend who was the Sales Manager for the company knew I was a "Knife Guy" and had a SOG Trident made for me with black scales and the company logo etched on a plain satin blade.
Every time I look at it, that little SOG makes me smile. :)

Cool stories.

Mine is an original old Gerber Evo 3.25" (I think) all black tanto flipper. Probably one of the first flippers. Skinny little piece of crap, half of which is donut hole, but it makes it ultra light. Probably has Maytag washers. I found it on a street on a Sunday morning...in very good condition...years ago. Out of some jogger's pocket most likely. Used it as a boot knife a long time. I still boot it now and then or just throw it in a pocket.

Never been tweaked; I did finally lube it a year ago, still perfect lockup, smooth to open, good detent, good edges. Sweet little piece of cheap garbage.

An old Gerber Firestorm. It flips horribly and I don't even know what mystery steel it uses, but it was a pawn shop find and a buddy brought it back to life.

I've been known to carry and use it ;)

I have two... A small Douk-Douk that I think is just a neat little knife. Very simple, yet functional... The other is a Mora Clipper I beat the crap out of all the time in the yard.

I agree. Love mine. I see all my more expensive folders every time I open the box to grab my Douk for the back pocket.

Your handle looks great.

I was gifted a fake southard
I even made a micarta scale for it

Of the knives I carry currently, the only real "guilty" pleasure would be the Cold Steel Recon 1. Clip point combo edge. Besides that, I have some older knives that I don't ever use but I keep in the knife drawer for posterity. They are SOG's. A battered and abused mini X-RAY Vision in ATS-34 (from 1999) that is so worn down I wont even attempt to resharpen it. Too much work. It has almost everything I abhor in knives--tanto combo edge. I broke the clip to it, and about two years a go I emailed SOG for a new one, and it turns out they changed the design of the clip when they changed the steel from ATS-34 to VG-10. Doesn't work with the old design. So being worn down and clipless, it sits in the drawer.

A Flash I with aluminum handle and black, combo edge blade. It's in pristine condition, but I just don't care for a/o or the combo edge, so it sits, unused.

SOG Seal Pup which has been through hell and back. Of the many SOG's I've owned, this is the best. Battered, beat, and scarred. Its seen acid, cut branches and firewood, and nearly cut the tip of my middle finger off when I first got it. I've also scraped dried epoxy and wood glue off some shelving, its been my go to multipurpose fixed blade for everything. I haven't retired it yet, but with an ESEE 5 and a Spyderco Schempp Rock, it doesn't get as much use anymore.

Yes, I was once a SOG Fanboi.

Last but not least, the pink Kershaw Shuffle. Granted I bought it for my girlfriend, and she carries it when she's not at work, but I like it a lot for cheap gimmicky folder.

Here's a few pics:

I was once a SOG fanboi too, but then they made decent stuff 10-15 years ago. Same could be said about Gerber.

Last SOG I EDCed was a SOG Vulcan and I really liked it and it gave me appreciation for VG-10, but then the clip broke and I could never get SOG to reply to my emails so now it sits in my collection.

My "guilty pleasures" are probably the CRKT M16 and M21 series, and currently Quartermaster knives. Neither have the best reputation, but they do the job for me. An M16-14M was my EDC for a very long time and it never did me wrong.

Both the Böker Plus Kalashnikov 101

Seriously fun beater knives !

SAK tinker for me, I have a lot of money tied up in knives of all types I have acquired over the years, but most days I have the tinker in my pocket and I just enjoy using and playing with it. I have better SAKs like my GAK or alox soldier, but a plain Jain tinker or spartan with the red cellidor trips my trigger.

I also rely on my mora companion as my favorite fixed blade, despite having a fallkniven F1 and some customs, idk why I love the mora so much, but it's my preferred fixed blade nearly every time.

I really should carry and use some of my pricier knives or start selling them off, I hate seeing all that money and time tied up in a dresser drawer when I get by just fine with my SAK and mora.

I really don't think I can play this game. I've been listening to you guys long enough to know not to buy cheap junk, but not long enough that I have reason to not buy knives made by Kershaw, Cold Steel, Buck and other similar brands.

I had an M16-12Z. Terrible knife. Lock sucked, and the steel was a joke. Chipped like crazy. I through it off a cliff in the forest preserve near me I hated it so much. I also will never buy another chisel grind knife as long as I live.

This is going to sound a little weird, I know. Bear with me. My guilty pleasure is a Zero Tolerance 0777 M390. It is a sort of grail knife for me (wanted the original, but had to settle for the M390). In my role as Office Ninja, I've done what I could to abuse it, cutting zip ties, slashing copier paper, and once even carved on a piece of 7075-T6 aluminum. I love this knife! It just feels so good in my hand! I mean, really, should I take pleasure in abusing a perfectly good knife? And oh, does it take an edge! Did I mention that I love this knife?

On the other hand, today I've got a Kershaw Cryo 2 in my pocket. In blackwash, of course, because we Office Ninjas need the best. :)

It worked for me. Yeah, chisel grinds suck, but I beat the crap out of that thing and it's still ticking. It was the coolest knife I ever had for a long time. My grandpa had given me a nice Spyderco when I was 8 or 9 and I promptly lost it, so after that I stayed away from nicer knives. The M16 was the most expensive knife I had ever bought when I got it!

So yeah, it's somewhat of a crappy knife, but it holds a lot of sentimental value for me.
