I was in Mexico recently, and a friend took me to a lumber yard where the owner generously gave me a chunk of what he called "guipinol." My friend said it is also called "jatoba" in Brazil. It looks like ironwood, not highly figured, and they were using it for beams on new houses, because it is highly resistant to termites. All cut by chainsaw, really impressive. Anyway, I was interested in using it for knife scales, and was wondering if anyone has experience with the wood. It seems too heavy for stabilizing, but would like any opinions out there.

Give it a try Phil, nothing to lose. might this wood be what we call here yew wood?
