Hey Guys,

I make steel bodied resonator guitars. I'm attempting to use ferric chloride to give the steel a dark patina. I get the stuff from Radio Shack, spray it on, rinse, spray again etc until I get a depth I like. Dry with towl. All is well, a nice dark grey/black color. Shortly after it turns brown, even after immediately sealing with Sculpt Noveau's metal finish. I'm assuming it's rusting, but not sure why after being sealed immediately.

You probably need to neutralize the acid before you try sealing it. Trisodium Phosphate (TSP) works, or baking soda and water. You could also use mustard to patina it.

Very possible,if you do not nuetralize the acid it will continue to work causing your problem.

Neutralize with household ammonia and water. Then boil in distilled water.
