Gun barrels for forging?

I have a couple large gun barrels I was going to get rid of, but then I thought maybe they would be good for making blades out of. Wasn't sure about the chrome lining aspect though, or if the steel itself is suitable.

They are really big. If anyone is familiar with FALs, they are both Israeli heavy barrels.
 
Generally, gun barrels are made from only moderately hardenable steel like 4140 that is good for taking shock w/o breaking, but would not hold an edge.
 
With so much known hi carbon steels around I wouldnt forge gun barrels. What caliber are they? I'm sure somebody would like to have them or would trade steel for them.
 
They are in .308, but they're not much good, unless someone makes custom barrels. One's been hacked off the end, rather non-professionaly and the other's shoulder has it dangerously out of headspacing.
 
The FN FAL is a beautiful battle rifle. It's the only weapon to beat the AK47 in being issued by more country's military's

Wade, if they are 4140, They'll make fine axes/hawks/hatchet/hammer/drifts/punches etc etc. They'll make rockin striking tools.

Yes, I a big fan of the FAL myself. The right hand of the free world, as it's known.
Thanks for the info on possible uses. I'll try to figure out what they are made of. Probably stamped on the barrel somewhere... but I can't read Hebrew. :D

IIRC, the izzy barrels are chrome lined. I don't know if that will make a difference in the forging or not.
 
my boss is a gun nut and makes his own guns quite often as he owns the machine shop. he is the one that got me started making my 50BMG rifle ;) so he would most likely love them.
