Gun blue-ing knives?

I've never had a product related failure with Gun Kote... only the dumb mistake kind such as spitting airbrush or dust landing on the part etc. I haven't tried any of the other shake n bake coatings.

I use corundum in the blasting cabinet and it works great and lasts a long time.

RDT check the NYC area yellow pages. In the area you're bound to find some firm who can do PVD tool coatings. TiAlN is the almost black one; DLC is a similiar one and therre may be other trade names. I think these coatings are all much better for cutting tools than any of the bake-on stuff. TiAlN is about 3000 Vickers which is way way harder than the blade. The PVD coatings are also very thin so there are no tolerance problems with folders. TiAlN may be used on food service equipement safely too. You must finish your blade as you want it to look: polished stays polished once it's coated and bead blasted stays matt. You can get a cool contrast on one blade that way. I'm working on some M2 HSS folder blades today that will have a two tone look with TiAlN.
