Gun experts, answers please

Go here for some more comments on the .50 BMG from this idiot.

Here's my favorite:

"If someone is so fearful that, that they’re going to start using their weapons to protect their rights, makes me very nervous that these people have these weapons at all."

I hope this fool is extremely nervous!

A wonderful military cartridge designed by John Browning for the machine gun. It is now also used in rifles by people such as SEAL teams as a sniper rifle . However it has also become used for long range target shooting such as the 1000 yd matches. It is also used for long range hunting and I heard of a hunter getting an elk with one last year at 600 yds.Anti-gun people like Schwartzenegger think its evil !!

My ballistics tables show the .50BMG round maxed with 660 gr bullet at 3080 FPS and 13910 Ftlbs of energy. The closest big game round I know of is the .577 Tyrannosaurus from A-Square that uses a 750 gr bullet at 2480 FPS and 10240 Ftlbs.

The .577 has around 225 lbs of kick, which is around 11 times that of a 30-06 with 180 gr bullet maxed out. None for me thanks.

I like my 25-06 with 100 gr XLC Barnes. It will take anything I am apt to hunt for at the ranges I am comfortable with.

don't know if this was a real story, but I seem to remember a story of a sniper team in either the first Gulf War or the invasion of Iraq who used the .50 Barrett to take out not one, but two BMP's... As I remember it, the sniper hit the first one disabling it so heavily that the second one's crew all jumped up and surrendered!

And I seem to remember that part of that story is that it was out at a range of almost a mile...

And, the record for a distance kill, if this story, too wasn't a fabrication.... was from a Canadian sniper who took someone out at well over a mile... but it took him like three shots to hit the guy..

All's I know, it'd be too dang expensive, heavy and unwieldy for the criminally inclined to bother with...

Those Canadians were using the McMillan .50 rifle. It's a sweet piece. Taht story about the long distance shot was in SOF a couple years back, and it's a good read.
