Gun guy asking dumb knife question. Danger of opening?

Tip down solves it. I don't need to worry about winning a quickdraw contest and it's what I'm accustomed to. Last time I got bit by a tip up Ruckus which is not cheap and is an Axis lock was the last time I contemplated carrying a tip up knife. As with all such this is personal opinion and preference. The new trend seems to be tip up and I say good for them.

I don't use clips and carry the knife just loose in my pocket. So far I had one knife opening in my pocket. I didn't know frame and liner locks weren't very safe to carry like that.
Good thing I've stopped carrying frame and liner locks..

Appreciate all the honest stories. This is what I'm trying to avoid.

I carry my gun in a proper holster and have a thumb safety. Some say its redundant, but I train for it.

I suppose I'm looking for the equivalent in a good knife. I'll have to read about the different action types suggested here.

I had a negative experience with a tip down knife, so I only carry knives that are tip up since the blade rests against the back of your pocket. I carried a Benchmade Aphid that slightly opened in my pocket without my knowledge. When I reached in my pocket to grab my keys, my hand was spiked by the blade. It could have been much worse, so I stopped carrying tip down.

My tip-up knives(pivot at the bottom of the pocket) have always had the spine resting against the edge of my pocket, and none of them opened in the pocket by themselves. I can't imagine how that would happen with the spine against the pocket edge. A tip-down knife(pivot at the top of the pocket) in the same position has nothing holding against the spine and could, theoretically, pop open. It all depends on how you carry it. I would moved the tip-down knife to the front of my pocket, with the spine against the pocket edge.
