Gun Help

get the 10/22. you should learn marksmanship first. the .22 is way better than the mosin nagant for this and the cheap cost of the .22 and the nonexistant recoil will make the fundamentals easy to focus on. shotguns are too limited imho. additionally, the 10/22 can make life super easy as far as customizations go. plug and play

If you can find a 10/22 under $200, go for it.
great rifle for learning marksmanship, and a lot of cheap fun for plinking.
Last i saw, marlin model 60 rifles were pushing the $200 mark, and while that's what i started out learning to shoot with, the
Ruger is IMHO a better tool in the long run.
maverick or Remmy 870 express are both good shotguns.
buy used if you can find one - should be able to get one well under $200.
not knowing how big you are, I'm going to suggest a 20 gauge to start. lighter recoil, lighter overall, so faster to come on target and faster for the followup shot once you have some practice under your belt. (a lot of cowboy action shooters prefer 20 gauge over 12 for these 2 reasons - and it's still a good home defense round)

which one to start with depends on what you want to do.
plink, target shoot, maybe pot the occasional rabbit or tree rat? 10/22.
bird or deer? shotgun. (you can hunt deer with rifled slugs)

either way, good luck and let us know what you get!

I bought a 10/22 on my 18th birthday. I suggest that. Cheap to shoot and fun as all get out.

I second Mossbergs for first shotguns for that price. Of course you can find used remington 870s for that price too.

You might look into Savage Model 93 .17HMRs. They are a blast too shoot and extremely accurate.

If youre looking into a bigger bore rifle (hunting or long range) look at the Savage Edge series. For a little more than $200 you can get one of those and supposedly they are very nice entry level guns. check it out at www.gunbroker.com

Happy Birthday by the way. 18 is a good age. imo, spend more of your money on guns than beer or cigarettes.

Hey there. Well as for an all around great 22. I agree with most everyone here about the Ruger 10/22. 10/22s can be changed into almost any style of rifle you could think of. Plus the fact that anywhere I had seen shooting (smallbore) competitions about 80% were tack driving 10/22s. I use one myself. About 10.000+ RDs through it, and its still a honey. Shotguns.. My choice. Remington 870. 870s are known to Not! jam, and although I have a 12 ga. I also use (alot) a youth model 20ga. 870 with a soft butt stock (puts more length on the gun) and with its 20ga. you can shoot slugs, sabots, buckshot, and it holds 3in. magnum loads. Its light so you can git it on target fast, I didn't know of any 12s, or 20s jaming. Alot of Sp. forces guys like the 870. And they are at a good price. Bought mine on sale 10 years ago for $208.00 so you can find cheaper prices for them. Me If I had to chose again, I would still buy both the 10/22 and the 870. Never had a problem with either. And you could find good used ones, and get both for under $350-$400. and be really happy you:thumbup: did. enjoy. edgy

As for shotguns, I picked up a Ultra 87 (Remington 870 fixed choke made by Norinco in China) for 125 bucks. It's reliable, comfortable and well made. This winter I nabbed an Ithaca 37 and a Benelli Nova for less than 300 as well..

Dont start cheap and move up, save for the gun YOU want. Waiting 2 weeks to save up the extra change is better then getting a gun you wont be satisfied with. If you must start cheap though, get a 10/22. You can always upgrade that.
