hello all. i have a question about baking a blade in an household oven. i have a spray on black teflon coating (gun-kote) finish that i ordered from brownells. im thinking about taking apart an all steel frame lock knife i have and spraying all the pieces, parts, and blade (except the nylon spacers) with the gun-kote finish and then i have to bake the parts in an oven at 300 degree for something like an hour. my question is this will keeping the blade in this degree of heat hurt the blade temper or will it come through the process just fine. i dont want to destroy the knife's edge holding ability. what do you guys think?,,thanks for the help.,,VWB.

The low temps for curing are not going to hurt the metals temper. Before you coat all the parts think real hard about how that layer of paint is going to effect your fit tolerances.

the gunkote might keep the framelock from going back together properly, because now the parts will be a different thicknesess.

well its supposed to have a thickness of .0004 or someting like that. supposedly even internal gun parts can be coated with this stuff without any tolerance problems. im more worried about the effects of the exterme heat on the blade than anything else. thanks for the input,,,VWB.

i guess i should have specified the steel. it is 440C stainless. will that kind of heat hurt the blade temper?...VWB.

The only way that 300 F. would hurt it is if you leave it at that temperature for a couple of days. Termpering is a time/temperature relationship. For one hour the effect will be insignificant. It might not even be enough to show up on a series of catra tests.

Go ahead with confidence! You're safe as far as the temper is concerned.

Not to be a dick, but on a 440c knife that uses nylon washer I doubt there is a decent quality HT to begin with.
