Alan,

Can you translate this sentence for me? I read what you write with interest, and don't want to miss anything. I understand the "heavily discounted part" but not the reason.

You wouldn't want civilians to own Olympic style 22 pistols would you? We already have too many gold medals from the Olympics in the USA anyway?

I guess its a good thing I don't shoot competition in California.

Our Olympic team have to go to France to practice, they have to leave their target pistols there too as they arent allowed in the country!!

I was at a gunshop this week when some poor schlub came in to get an estimate on a gun had had for a while. It was one of those semi-auto Mauser-like pistols in .22. "That's a felony!" They said. They confiscated the gun and called the police. "Don't worry," they said, "You probably won't be charged." How sweet.

Say HUH? Do you mean that the guys at the gunshop confiscated the gun and called the police? What sort of gunshop are you patronizing? In any event you reminded me why I only will purchase used firearms in the future. Paper trail? What paper trail?

I like my mini-14 especially since it was made during the ban with all those nasty accessories and it says law enforcement only all over it. It's way too dangerous to have in California. It might just go shoot someone.

While I know you can get a lot more accuracy out of a AR-platform, I like my Mini-14 for what it is--a handy, fun shooter. I sent mine to Accuracy Systems Inc and they "accurized" it for me--target crown, match trigger, harmonic stabilizer, etc...and now it shoots pretty darn tight groups. Mind you, I'm not able to drop them into tight groups at 500 yards, like I did on Parris Island back in 1986 with an M-16, but it's just fine at 100-200 yards. Luckily I had a bunch of pre-ban Ruger factory mags for mine (4-20 rounders and 2 30-rounders) which was good because it is AMAZING what people are asking for factory mags now. With what people have offered me for the mags, I'd say they're worth more than the gun now! If I were buying a .223 today, I would have to agree with most of these guys that a AR-style is a better value. Just my .02 cents worth. Best Regards--Jim SEMPER FI

I have been remiss in reading posts lately.

Book on the Ruger was $600 + I bought it about 2 1/2 years ago. Lived in Port Orange Fl then & there wasn't much hunting or many gun ranges nearby. When we spotted it & the price was $400 the wallet came out then & there.

The only other long weapon is an Albanian SKS & I lucked up there too. It was at a flea market & the guy said it was a very rare gun. Ho,hum ,sales pitch ? No ! ,it was true. that $180 investment was good. Saw one recently at gun show for $500 & not in good condition.

I bought my SS Mini-14 in the mid-late 70's. Then added an after market folding stock, flash suppressor, and bought a .22 LR conversion kit for plinking. It reminds me a lot of my issue M-14 and it's a fun shooter.
