Well I'm looking to purchase my first automatic handgun and am looking at a couple of models and would like some advice. First off I prob should say what I want it for. Well I want to be able to carry it concealed and also it will be shot quite a bit at the range and trained with. so for exhibit A we have the Sig 220 in .45, i've shot a couple sigs and love them to death they are amazing. the best price i've found for where i live (cali) is 790 out the door. It has been suggested if i'm looking at .45s i need to look at 1911's so the one that caught my eye was the extended magazine one (all of 10 rnds) so let me know what you think, if you have other suggestions that'd be great. Also if you have any places where you like to purchase your guns that'd be cool. It appears that in order to do a handgun transfer from another state to cali is 200. Finaly if you have some good websites for good holster makers that'd be greatly appreciated. thanks

The 220 is a big gun so I don't think you should try to conceal that one. One does not necessarily need a 1911 if the .45 caliber cartridge is required. There are quite a few other .45 pistols that are compact, fit well in the hand and quite accurate. If this is your first handgun, realize that you have a lot of training to conduct and you're going to have to very careful of what you're doing with it at all times.

I guess I should give a little more info on myself, i've been shooting for bout 7 years now and have shot many different guns from .22's to sniper rifles so I've shot a fair bit though I do want some more formalized training. Well if there are some other guns please do let me know. I've looked at about a dozen and a half different handguns for this purpose and it seems that the full size guns fit my hands best and they are easy enough to hide by wearing a button down shirt untucked and jeans which is just bout every day wear for me. Also if anyone has any ideas for transfering guns from out of state to cali for less then $200 let me know thanks.

I have a P220, and while I love it and it is in the role of my primary home defense gun, I certainly wouldn't want to try carrying it concealed.

If you want to stay with SIG, the P245 might be a better choice for concealed carry.

Have you tried any Glocks? The 36 is one of the easiest .45's to conceal, although it's a real handful (for me anyway) to shoot.

Also, if you're open to a .40 there are quite a few great compact models out there (Glock 23/27 are my favorites, and the SIG P229/P239).

living in england, where anyhting fun is banned,
I have no direct experiance.
However if your looking at a full size .45
I've heard nothing but great things about the CZ 97B, and its not to expensive either.

Get yourself a Glock model 23. That's all you need to know.:).

Take a look at the HK USP compact. They come in many Variants. You can have it configured similar to a 1911 or DAO or just about any way you like. Accuracy is good and so is reliability. The trigger is kind of 'Squirtgunny' to some but I have Glocks and the same is said of those. The mag release on the HK is really trick too.

I also recommend the Glocks. Try them out it in your hand. I went with the .40 S&W years ago because the .45 felt so big. But now with the single stacked .45's that may not be a factor any more.

To quote Clint Smith when asked why he carries such a big gun and if it was uncomfortable to wear he answers "Guns aren't supposed to be comfortable, just comforting."

Speaking from personal experience having carried the square edged Glock model 20 for years in Texas using my Concealed Carry permit, a small guy like myself can in fact carry a full size pistol concealed. No, you won't do it successfully in a $10 gun show special holster but, it can be done.

In my case the double stack 10mm was carried in a Bianchi PDQ holster and I normally wore a loose fitting black T-shirt draped loosely over it such that it covered the hip holster without "outlining".

The Sig 220 is a lightweight pistol with rounded edges so, it will carry even easier then my larger, heavier, sharp edged, double stack Glock. For a fighting handgun, I recommend a full-size pistol because they are in general more forgiving of the little errors that sometimes happen under stress. If you really train and practice (not just primer testing ;) ), you can learn to carry and use anything effectively from a hard to use short barreled mouse gun to a full size cannon.

I can't believe you are getting stiffed for $200 to paper a transfer.

There has to be someone with morals who should for under $50, preferable closer to $20.

The Colt .45 and clones are my favorite. THe replacement parts are everywhere, mags are plentiful, and you can do most repairs yourself...

Look at the Colts, the Kimbers, Springfields, and according to some, the new S&W .45.

Good luck man.

Yah I can't believe the 200 either i'm going ot try to look at some other places and see what happens. Thanks for all the advice keep things coming, ideas on concealment rigs are always appreciated, sidpost how small are you if u mind me asking? and the holster you carried is iwb right? thanks

sounds like a bad news story...it's semi automatic...anything automatic in Cali is pretty much out for the average Joe :D

sorry just a pet peave of mine....News had a story about a shooting with an Automatic Revolver... quick web search..where can I get one ? LOL !

.45 guy, i was under the impression that if u called the handgun and automatic handgun you refered to the fact that it was semi auto and had a magazine as opposed to a revolver. but I could be completely off

guess it could be a regional thing...though here in Nevada when you say AUTO we mean full auto rock n roll .
My friend just bought a new 45...it's as single action as they come...pull the trigger...rack the slide....pull the trigger rack the slide...** shake head in between racks **.

Armscor Medallion...IMO...the worst $750 he could have spent.
Sure looks nice though...to bad it don't run worth a darn.

"Auto" is short for autoloader or in other words semi-automatic so it is correct to call it an auto. It is not correct to call a semi-automatic an automatic, though of course that doesn't stop some people from doing it....

There is such a thing as an automatic revolver, though I'm sure that reporter didn't know what he was talking about. When revolvers that automatically eject the empties from all the chambers at once were first invented (before the invention of semi-automatic pistols) they were often called automatic revolvers. There are still some WWI vintage Webley automatic revolvers around; I was looking at one just the other day -- ugliest revolver ever made IMHO, but it does work.

Speaking of news stories, I saw a report on rec.guns of a local television station's account of someone shooting at a police car (the bullet was deflected off the windshield) -- the reporter said in awed tones "it was a combat-size bullet." That kept me up half the night thinking about what the other sizes must be ... economy size ... family size ... fun size ...

... bath size, personal size....

BTW, the Glock I mentioned is an automatic handgun. I've seen one, but didn't get to shoot it. The guy (I think he runs Small Arms Review) said that he was worried that we couldn't control it because of the high cycle rate.

Does it need to be a .45? If not, then I suggest a SIG 229 in .357 Sig. I have big hands, and this one fits me very well. It also is compact enough to conceal. Don't let anyone try to tell you the .357 Sig isn't enough cartridge either. The .357 Sig cartridge has the same energy at 100 yds as the 9mm Parabellum has at the muzzle! And, it NEVER jams, due to the bottleneck cartridge design.

If you have Kazaa, run a quick search on "auto glock", under video. You can see it in action. Pretty crazy. Wish I could own something like that.

My suggestions:

-Kimber Custom Classic 45
-H&K USP

Ans since you never mentioned a price cap I Highly recomend the H&K Mark 23
