OK Folks, here are two of my newer acquisitions.

First, a Contender Carbine in 22lr, along with a squirrel target my second son shot at 50 yards from sitting at the range today.

next, an older Contender pistol in 30-30, with 22 lr barrel and holster.

The 30-30 is for the upcoming deer season, since i am in a pistol and shotgun only area.

here are two targets I shot today. The first is at 50, the second at 100. The shot to the right on both was the first shot on each target, sitting, left elbow on my left knee, iron sights as shown. The second shot on both was fired with both elbows supported on my knees, again sitting. Ammo was federal 125 hollow points. I'm thinking that with the velocity loss due to the 10 inch barrel, the hp was a better choice than the 150 or 170 grain loads. No time to work up hand loads. These were fired after sighting in at 25.

I oriented the 100 yard target horizontally, as the vital zone on a Deer is more aligned this way.

With the light octagon barrel, it has quite a bit of jump. About like a 5.5" Super Blackhawk I used to own, as far as I can remember.

I've been carrying the 22 after squirrel, but no shot has presented itself yet. I want to stick with the irons, but I may put a scope on the 22 barrel eventually.

A 223 10" bull barrel is coming for my birthday. We also have a 24" 410 barrel for the carbine.

High quality, enjoyable rigs! One plus for the pistol, I can carry it in a pack legally, based on my carry permit. A light set up that travels well, should the proverbial but hopefully never happens bug out scenario should ever present itself.

Anyway, as a gun thread, please fee free to show your own stuff!

I originally discovered the Cantina years ago while pondering the survival gear question. The Khukuri, an interest of mine from my youth, seems to be the ideal survival tool, being capable as knife, axe, and sword. The Contender fits another niche in my "kit", and is just plain fun to shoot!

Take care,

Tom

Nice Contenders Tom! Me likey. They're really nice pistols and accurate too, as y'alls target's confirm.
That shot on the squirrel target by your son is spectacular to say the least!!!! But you really oughta try to get your son to focus on head shots on squirrels, wastes less meat that way, and if you wanna really put the pressure on him tell him about the old mountain men killin their squirrels without making a bullet hole in 'em by, "Barkin" 'em. That way an eye shot seems a whole lot less daunting...;)

I'm of the opinion that the reason a lot of guys don't care for 'em for hunting is that good ol' Uncle Bud er someone of similar ilk kept talkin their 45-70 Contender up until the person tried shooting it "Against" their better judgment and then had the Contender Trounce on them because Goot Ol' Uncle Bud just happened to give 'em some really hot loads he made up for just such an occasion!!!

Some beauties there Tom. One of these days I'll get off my butt, get my licence, and acquire a quality .22lr rifle.

Thanks for the comments guys. It took me a while to get my pistol license when we moved up to new York 6 years ago. Just a bit of a procedural headache, but it wasn't too bad. other than being unconstitutional, of course...

Yvsa, you are right about the head shot thing! It will come in time. My oldest was working with 12 ga slugs for the first time at the range yesterday. That would be good for barking squirrels, perhaps?

:)

Take care,

Tom

" This is my rifle! There are many like it, but this one is mine!!"

This is my 1964 Ishapore 2A rifle in 7.62x51. I've owned it for almost 2 years now, but have only recently begun shooting it regularly. This rifle came to me covered in black fuzzy paint/preservative/bat guano but cleaned up nicely. I think the stock is Indian rosewood, and has a nice reddish tint to it. I installed a British nose-cap instead of the squared-off factory piece(purely for looks), but I have kept the original part. All parts, even the magazine, have matching serial numbers.

Using some early 70's FN ball ammo I can hit plastic bottlecaps at 50yds firing from the offhand position, and clay pigeons at 100 standing, as well. I'm sure it will group well, but I've never 'benched' the rifle. I'm used to shooting 'at' things, rather than firing for group.

Best $200 I've spent in a long time.

Very nice, gentlemen!

I recently picked up this little Taurus Public Defender in .45LC/.410. It's a powerful little package. I felt the need to make a holster for it as well.

Nice stuff!

I had a 2a once. It had some mechanical issues, but i would love to have another someday.

Been thinking about the Taurus, especially since we have the 410 barrel for the carbine. Nice work on the holster! Nice knife too!

Thank for the input!

Got two cans of Brownell's Aluma-Hyde II on the way. My S&W, 700 Sendaro .270 and FAL are going to get some special treatment one of these next few weekends...

S&W 625JM .45 ACP
Ruger Blackhawk .357
Colt 1911 XSE .45 ACP

Also have a Glock 17 and a Ruger LCP, but everyone knows what those look like.

Nice stuff all!

The 30-30 contender, a 12" villager AK, and a marbles hunting knife will be heading out in the am for opening day!

Just finished assembling this mail order project, always a relief when the finished product comes together successfully. It's a Remington 1858 New Army converted to handle .45 Colt cowboy action loads. My last Pietta New Army, made in 1996, had its mechanical quirks. This 2010 version has significantly better fit and finish. The Kirst converter just arrived today - complete with a full page of how-to fixes in the event it didn't fit or work in half a dozen different ways. However, it just dropped into place without any drama, and works fine. Hope to get this rig to the range soon to try her out.

My Israeli light-barrel FAL. It was built from a kit found at the Knob Creek machinegun shoot 14-15 years ago by a friend, and built on an Entreprise Arms receiver. I've owned it for almost 8 years.

LOLOL, Tom I suppose it'd work and no doubt was already being done by some of the Old Timers using .50 caliber and above; seeing as how any sort of full body shot by anything of that caliber would be totally counterproductive.  ;) :D Tom I was just sorta pokin fun at you but if indeed you might be serious about trying it I'd suggest something more in the lighter end of the .30 caliber range, kinda like a .32 caliber. I've told the story of when I tried, 'barkin' a squirrel with my .357 Mag and missed by the bullet taking off one side of its widdle head as if it was deliberately cut in half from neck to nose with a meat cleaver, so often as too be boring by now. ;) :o
So actually your 30-30 Win is another option, that is if you could load 'em up enough to be effective on very small game although again in the overkill range even with the smaller sized bullets.;) :foot:

Nice blasters all. It's been a while since I've been shooting. Now that the little one's joined us, lazy afternoons where I can get to the range are few and far between. It seems that for the foreseeable future at least I have to be satisfied with dry firing this while watching television.

Hopefully when the little one grows up, you can go shooting together!

Nice Springfield!

Thanks Yvsa, I knew you were kidding, but I have a tender conscience, and the truth always affects me!

In a good way, i hope!

Tom
