Hi all my name is Geoff Mitchell and I live on PEI but soon willbe moving to Alberta or British Columbia. My question is what are the chances of getting a handgun permit or lisence. Is there any law that allows guide to carry a hangun when the guide is in bear country and all the other peoples lives are in his hands. Or does Canada make it impossible to carry a handgun. Thanks for you replys. Geoff. Oh and if we cant carry a handgun no matter what how hard is it to get your american rights? How hard would it be for me to move and live in the US. THanks

if you go to canada, just drive across the border through the forest... it's clear sailing from there. hehehe!!!

Geoff...

This is Off Topic But....

You first need a complete a FAC saftey course. Once you pass the test you apply for the FAC.

The FAC can take anywhere from 6-12 months to complete. They do a Full background check on you...

Geoff...
You Won't be able to carry in Canada,, period.. THe C-104 allows Transport ONLY to and from an authorized range.
Get caught at even a gunsmith with it,,you go down!

In some places like the Yukon and North West Terrotories, this law is a little slack, it's still there but some Coppers will look the other way when in places where bears hang out....

The best thing you will get,, if Anything will be a rifle or shotgun, and highly doubt any guide outfitter will supply you with one...

You are more likely to get hit by lightening three times in a row than being attacked by a bear out there anyway...

The entire FAC process is a pain in the Arse. I've been through it and it's not a lot of fun...

Hope this helps...It's not pretty but it's the Truth!

Eric...

I believe you are correct. Apparently Gunner doesn't think Normark answered his question sufficiently, I thought he did a good job and didn't leave much else to say. Personally I would not want to face a bear with a handgun anyway, that is why rifles are used. For bear I would take a 30.06 or a shotgun loaded with slug over a handgun any day.

The reason I put my msg back to the top is so I can get some more info. Normark is very right and I do already have my fac and firearm safety cetificate. But here on PEI I know of a couple of people that got a permit to carry and handgun on there person so I put the msg back up to try and get some more info. And to you Maskwa the reason I want to get info on handgun laws are the type of work I plan to do a rifle or shotgun is way to much weight and takes up way to much room. A .44 has been proven to take down many a bear and a hnadgun is much easier to swing around and a lot lighter to carry. Yes granted a 12 gauge shotgun with 000 buck shot would do the trick but on the light weight little gear canoe and backpacking trips I plan to be running someday a rifle or shotgun is a luxury I can have. I know some people will argue that a handgun is useless to a bear but when weight matters I would willingly make the trade. Geoff.

In Ontario there is little or no chance of getting a carry permit for anything other than to and from a gunclub.
Re effectiveness against bears: a 44 was enough to blow the face off a polar bear who poked his head in the wrong tent on Ellesmere Island a few years back. But that was at close range and the bear wasn't charging at 30 mph. A rifle or shotgun is better insurance, and easier to legally carry: so far...

I am surprised this topic is not locked as it is devoid of knife content, the moderators are being nice by allowing it to remain open.

Gunner you should go here: http://www.thefiringline.com/

To reiterate, in Alberta handguns are Restricted you must have a permit to own or transport them. If you really want to be the Clint Eastwood of guides know that you cannot do so legally in Alberta, perhaps you should move to the US.

My opinion is also unchanged on which firearm is appropriate for bear, I would use a rifle. Although given the choice I would sooner leave the bear alone, I don't particularly like how they taste

The sad state of Canadian gun rights are a portend for US gun owners. The Canadians let a rotten Socialist government strip away their rights to self defense. It can and will happen here unless we DO something about it.
Yes, thats right, join NRA and GOA, write your rep's, and turn someone who does not shoot on to guns.Preferably today.

The moderators (or at least this one) have just been slow. So much Internet, so little time! This looks like a "community" non-knife sort of thing, unless it turns political, that is. We'll try "community."
