I debated whether I would post here as this seems to be yet another rant on this largely misunderstood tool. That, is perhaps the key - the Gunting is a TOOL. It is not simply a knife. Those who criticise it as an ugly, or not so impressive "knife" are missing the point. It is more than a knife. You cannot compare it to other knives because it is more than they are.
I heavily questioned the Gunting and its system. I continued to question it after Bram Frank sent me literature on the subject and I had a Drone in my possession. I have recently come to appreciate it immensely after a LONG conversation with Bram himself and even more written information.
Anyone who thinks they need any "special" training to use a Gunting and somehow does not think they also need "special" training to use ANY knife or weapon in defence is utterly confused and bound for a whole lot of hurt in the future. Carry a "blackjack" or "sapper" with no training is actually worse in my view than carrying a Gunting. In most places those items are very illegal - likely more than a knife or Gunting as they can be classified as TOOLS. A blackjack is for whacking people...what do you say? "Sorry officer, I use it to beat the dirt out of my rugs at home and forgot it was in my pocket"?
The Gunting is far more than just a knife that is also a Yawara stick, or a yawara stick that is also a knife...ANY knife can be used closed to bash people. The Gunting provides OPTIONS.
I think that everyone should receive some of Bram's literature when they purchase the knife. Don't criticise what you don't understand. Look for answers instead. As Sergiusz Mitin said, you can't replace training with equipment. The same goes for all learning. You must learn how to use the equipment you carry or you are a daner to yourself and others. IN this case, if you are going to carry a Gunting, great, learn how to use it. Take a course. BUY THE VIDEOS!! You will spend $100 on a knife and not on videos that will save your life? If I can have a whole new understanding of the Gunting by talking to Bram (the videos are on the way) then the videos will for sure give you a foundation of techniques. As Bram says, "they are not rocket science". They use Gross motor skills and they are SIMPLE. This is Bram's whole idea - a system easy to learn and easy to use. THINK about it. Look at the Gunting and the Drone and see the possibilities...
