Gurkha Kukri...seeking nirvana

MD - I appreciate your input as well as everyone else's - the discussion is more informative than specific recommendations...

One seriouos question though - wouldn't a full-tang Khukri have more durability (especially handle strength) than a tapered tang...? Seems to be one of the main differences between Khukri House and HI...

and...what's a "Sirupati" ?

thx

Hi VW!

There is a good deal of discussion concerning the merits/demerits of full tang vs. rat tail or thru tangs.

I think it can be said with certainty that a full tang in a khuk is a strong handle, and better if one thinks they will be prying with the knife or needing (for some reason) to pound on the end of the pommel.

However, in my experience, the rat tail or thru tang is a better option for pure chopping use because, again IMO, it doesn't translate quite so much vibration to the hand. Also, it makes for a more blade heavy feel, more of a forward weight, which I prefer.

HI makes both full tang and thru tang models. They designate full tang knives with the use of the word "chiruwa". A "CAK" is a "chiruwa ang khola".

A sirupate is a thinner bladed model of khuk, often preferred by martialists. Not quite as good a model for heavy chopping.

Himalayan Imports offers both styles, the full tang or churwa and the taperd tang also known as a rat tail. I think you will find that the rat tail tang is almost as bullet proof as the full tang. A sirupate is a style of khukuri from the limbu and rai peoples of nepal. It is a thinner bladed khukuri that is favored by martial artists. It is more weapon than tool.

What is it that makes the CS version the best for you Andrew?

I like a modern kukri, using current materials and heat treatment the martempered sk-5 is really good. And the San-Mai kukri, well let me just say in the last Proof DVD a guy cut ,I think, 15 or 16 1 inch ropes in one cut

If that's your thing, then fine. Real khukris got tested on heads, necks, arms and the occasional tree.

I might also add that nothing that comes with a CS khukri feels or acts like a scabbard. Kydex is a step up from leather, but neither one is conducive to a fast draw or re-sheath like a traditional scabbard.
