Gurkhas in Combat

At this very moment, Gurkhas are involved in combat, or near-combat operations in two different parts of the world:

Kosovo:
Just learnt from BBC that two British Gurkhas were killed in a mine explosion in Kosovo. Both of them are listed as being from the 36th Gurkha Engineers. I think these are the first British casualties in Kosovo so far.

Kashmir:
On the other side of the world, the fighting in Kashmir is raging on furiously, with a lot of the fighting being reported as hand-to-hand. Some of this is taking place at heights of 18,000 ft or more. The casualty list is running into the hundreds, and I saw several KIAs from the Indian Gorkha units, specifically the 1st Battalion 11th Gorkha Rifles (1/11 GR) and 6th Battalion 11th Gorkha Rifles (6/11 GR). They were listed as hailing from my dad's hometown of Darjeeling, right across the Nepalese border in the Indian Himalayas.

Sad news, Nephew, but combat without men getting killed is not in the realm of possibility. I do not know where this Kasmire problem will end but I hope it does not lead to an exchange of missiles, especially if they are nuclear equipped.

Update: Just saw this on the news.

"The blast that killed two civilians as well as the two soldiers from the 69th Gurkha Field Squadron was caused by a mine or booby-trapped device on school grounds west of Kosovo's capital, the allies said."

There are going to be a couple of sad families back in Nepal tonight.
