I had a request for a gut hook on one of my damascus drop points. I Cut a slot and am working on it with my dremel and files. Any tips on doing these more easily?:(
I don't have any fancy tools. Not looking forward to creating the edge after it's hardened. How close can I get it without cracks. Quenching in warm peanut oil.

a rod wrapped with sand paper that way you know the size and can get paper in grits to 2000 for sharpening

i make my hooks on a 3/4 wheel and clean up with the same size dowel rod

check out the gut hook i put on this knife. http://mysite.verizon.net/ress6fq6/id16.html
i cut my guthook with a dremel and a small stone but i leave a 1/32 flat for heat treat. i use the same stone after the heat treat to take it the rest of the way down pouring water on it often to keep it cool. when i work up a burr i switch to a leather disc in my dremel tool with some white compound to remove it. i can split a hair with the gut hook on either one of these knives.

Thanks guys. I was hoping for something real creative. Sounds like Dremel, file and sand. It's looking good, but boy it takes time. How much extra shall I charge?:D

the sanding rolls dremel has does a better job at cutting. i have some carbide rotary files that i forgot to mention in my first post that i use to cut the initial slot. you can also use a 1/4" right angle grinding wheel to cut the slot real quick if you want a wide one. the mod i done to the one hog skinner took less than a half hour and that included taking the time to keep things cool so i didnt hurt the temper. it only takes a few minutes to sharpen.

like i said i run a big hook but that just makes for more cutting edge and less binding of flesh in use

thats why i had to open up both guthooks and sharpen up the spine some more. the lower one worked fairly decent on hogs but on a cow it bunched up. he said now it works just fine. i decided to do the other one after that.

On the few that I have made, I cut the slot with a bandsaw and then do the rest with a chainsaw file. Then I wrap sandpaper around the file for finishing.

If I can I usually drill a hole the proper size for the base of the slot ,then its the rod and sandpaper trick.
Ken.
