Guthook question

Has anyone had any experience with the Big Bend Guthook blade kit from Texas Knifemaking Supply? My boss in an avid hunter and I was considering making this kit as a gift for him. Any info would be appreciated!
 
true, but I think a complete knife would have a better impact. Any idea on edge retention,or toughness?
 
Those kits are merely said to be 440 SS which most likely means 440A. This is not a good knife steel because it does not have enough Carbon to harden well. Many factory knives are made with it-it is similar to 420J-but only because it is so cheap.

If you want to finish a kit knife for someone, look for a higher quality steel. Otherwise you are just giving them the equivalent of a cheap factory knife.
