Recommendation? Gym/active carry

Sweat (essentially just warm salt water) can wreak havoc on knives. Here's one of my Dragonflys in ZDP-189 where I failed to properly clean and store it just one time and it noticeably corroded the blade after it sat for a day. I leave it like that as a reminder of both my carelessness, and the necessity to make better choices. This was just clipped in my pocket during a very hot work day. Granted this steel is more susceptible to corrosion than most others. My fault, and a lesson learned. Now I only use the "Salt" versions when doing anything sweaty in addition to other water activities, since not just the blade steel is ultra corrosion resistant, but all of the hardware as well.

For a gym knife, I would definitely choose Salt.

In gym/lightweight clothes, which is what I’m generally wearing in my free time, I either carry a Mini-bugout or a Dragonfly 2. I don’t take anything into the gym that would be expensive or difficult to replace if it got stolen. So, even those knives have to wait in the truck while I’m in the gym.

Depends on how much you sweat, and how your sweat affects steel. It does seem to vary from person to person.
If you sweat a lot the Spyderco Salt series is light and pretty much corrosion proof. I'd look at something in that series.
If corrosion is less of an issue, maybe a VG10 Dragonfly. Very light weight but still has a clip and is a useful size.

I don't sweat a lot but then again, as I've stated, I already have one confirmed case of rusting a knife from carrying inside the waistband of my shorts albeit partially due to my negligence in cleaning it. Man these Dragonflys are tiny!
I have a civivi elementum wharncliffe as my work knife. I ride a motorbike for work. It rains. I get wet. Knife gets wet. Hasn't rusted yet.

Nitro v steel which is supposed to be rust resistant.

The wharncliffe makes it a really nice slicer and packet opener.

No idea about the fuzzy waist band.

Or. Do what I do at the gym and carry a fanny pack.
If I'm gonna wear my fanny pack at the gym it's gonna have my FN in it too and then I'll just feel weird I think. Definitely wouldn't be able to run with it.
In shorts / sweats / workout gear and not home it means a quick errand, walking trail with my wife or the gym. That means Tommy's Gunpack for the G19 ,spare mag, keys, wallet, flashlights...and whatever Sebenza I want. I also a few months ago put a dedicated untratech in the bag between the mag and light.
Actually just loaded up for my 1st post surgery walk this morning.
Yuck it up youngsters...pops is well armed.

AWESOME setup here 😍. Thanks for sharing. I carry a handgun in a fanny too for most errands and my only issue with it is how big it is. I've never heard of "Tommy's Gunpack". I'll have to look into them.
Is everyone talking about packing a blade during the lifting sessions? That's dedication, I can only think of one cutting task that would arise in that setting.

I'd pick a gym that doesn't have "yard" in the name for sure.
Yes. At least that's what I'm talking about. Dedication, for me, would be more like wearing my fanny pack with my gun in it while lifting (as I said above). But yeah, I was taught to "always be ready" so even having a small knife on my versus nothing makes a difference to me.

I'll keep a look out for any Spydie Salts I like on the secondhand market. In the meantime, does anyone know if my CJRB black coated SS Pyrite is in danger from corrosion wedged in my gym shorts for a couple hours every day?

Yes, but because of the finger choil and the configuation of the handle, you get a full four finger grip.
And the blade is big enough to handle any cutting chore you'd want to tackle in gym shorts. ;)

I carried a Spyderco Delica or Byrd Tern when I was running. I didn’t carry anything for weight training.

Lululemon workout shorts and pants have a second hidden pocket in the right front pocket that works great for wire clips. A Quiet Carry Drift (not large) or any Spyderco with the wire clip completely hides in that pocket. Just food for thought + a few recommendations.

I can only answer the "active carry" part of the question as I don't go to gyms...

Spyderco UKPK Salt for me. Thin, light as air, corrosion resistant. I've done hundreds of miles of bike riding with one clipped in a jersey pocket, not a hint of rust.

Idk if I every carried on me in the gym?
I know I'm not answering your question OP, and I apologize, but I gotta go with this sentiment here. I've spent a lot of time in gyms. I'd consider it bad form for anyone to carry a knife on the floor and I know that any old-school gym would agree (can't speak to the modern big box gyms). On the floor, you won't have to open packages, process wood, make dinner. Worst case you might have to cut a loose thread on your gym shorts but if the loose thread gets really bad you can just go back to the locker room.

If there is *any* hint in your mind that you have the thing for use as a weapon, can I suggest that you absolutely shouldn't be carrying it? I don't want to second guess your thinking but I could understand - you've got blood and testosterone pumping, you're looking at guys who are fitter than you are, some instinct is cropping up maybe? Don't dare feed that instinct, especially if you're at all thin-skinned, since comraderie in a gym includes a lot of s&$% talk.

If you actually feel like there is a threat, then (a) consider a new gym or if you're actually living in a 1980's movie and you can't back down then maybe (b) get better at stick fighting. You have a good reason to have a stick if you're spending 10 minutes practicing your form on the mat in front of a mirror. It would also dissuade people, assuming you're any good. (And if you aren't, don't expect that to change in a confrontation.)

Sorry, this turned into a treatise. Let me answer your actual question:

For a knife to use while exercising, like if you're trail running or something, that's different. Personally I bring my Buck Slim Select 112 and I do make sure to keep it clean and oiled (mineral oil) in case I sweat on it or from corrosion in general. It works great, but I've been eyeing an H2 Dragonfly for a while myself, though for different reasons.

This thread reminded me of this SNL Weekend Update story from yesterday 😂

I assume OP isn’t intending on a knife for self defense - it’s 2024, the statistics just don’t support it. I almost forget that some folks do carry knives for defense. Those are silly people.

Learn to fight, carry a gun, or stay home.

It's not my intent to start a big political, moral, or philosophical debate, however, I will say that this addresses the same topic of people who carry firearms vs. people who would ask someone why they feel they need to carry a gun. Those who carry know why and I would say it's rather difficult to explain to those who don't. With that being said, I did just start this thread to see what knives people would usually choose to carry in situations where they would might be active aka exposing it to a warm moist environment.

If I was going to carry in a gym, not a health club, a gym, I have an auto that triggers by sliding the end of the handle downward. Its clip goes up, and then back down, so all you can see is a strip of metal on top of my waistband. It has a high chromium blade (cheap), which simply won't rust. It won't hold an edge either.

I bought a box of them in Italy 15-20 years ago. They're the kind that have a tab to manually open the blade, but also full auto using a different mechanism. It's good for states where autos are illegal.
