I recieved my new H&B Forge Mouse Hawk the other day.
My first impressions of it were that it was REALLY small. It comes in at a featherlight 10 oz.I thought it was too small to be a useful chopper. The edge didn't help either.it was very thick and not terribly sharp.
So I went to work with my stones and in not too long a time I raised a sharp edge that satisfied me.(I'm very picky with edges).
I went into the local woods looking for a good test for this small hawk and I found it in a slim birch tree.

I found that it was a lot easier than I thought to chop with.It plowed through the tree with a reasonable amount of effort. The biggest complaint is that it was a little light so I needed to put more force than a heavier hawk would have needed to chop.
All that said it handled the job quite well and I'll have no problem taking it on my 4 day hiking trip with me as my camp chopper. It also holds a great edge.after all the chopping it only needed very little touching up with a ceramic stone.
Best of all it cost only 17.99$ so I'm not out too awful much if something befalls it on the trail.

This won't be my last purchase from H&B.I'm looking at the Scout or Shawnee hawk for my next hawk purchase.

I've had 4 H&B Hawks over the years, and still have 3.
I got their small spiked hawk, and my only complaint was it had the eye for the tiny mouse hawk handle. Your mouse hawk seems to have the standard sized eye/handle, not the tiny one, am I wrong?
I have a Shawnee, the Spiked hawk, and a custom Skeggox, with the Shawnee eye/handle.
I sold my Roger's Rangers hawk, but to one of my best friends so I get visitation.
$17.99?????? :eek:For the hawk or the ceramic stone?

A small Spiked Hawk with the standard Shawnee eye would be optimum in my opinion.

Nice pic savagesicslayer
how did you wrap the handle?never seen before this method !

thanks

Sorry.I wasn't ignoring all of you I just spent 4 days in the bush hiking.
I didn't buy the hawk from H&B directly I got it from the gunworks muzzelloading emporium.I think they're linked somehow.
The shaft is a normal sized the head is small.
I wrapped the hawk's handle close to the head for precision cutting and the farther back wrap is for chopping. It's just my personal preference.

Is this the one?

If so, is it really a H&B? The Gun Works offers several 'hawks, manufactures listed as either H&B or "Custom", with the Mouse 10 oz version listed as "Manufactured by Custom".

Thank you for the correction Shecky.I'm sorry for the confusion everyone.:foot: :foot: :foot: :o
My hawk has a small 3 and a J on the side of the head.Still it's a great little hawk.

Good work. I liked the review and the hawk. Only 18 bucks!! that's pretty cool. I like the handle with the cord. :)

Completely unrelated to the Hawk, how do you like your Fallkniven knife?

Ounce for ounce it may be the best all round knife I have.Have a look at the search.I started a thread about Fallkniven knives a while back.
I find it compliments my hawks well as a backup knife.

Sorry I'm a bit late to the discussion, but I'll second the positive comments regarding the Mouse Hawk. I just got one earlier this week from the same people, The Gun Works, and it's a very nice little hawk for only about $26 including shipping. I also reworked the edge on mine to a convex shape and it cuts surprisingly well for such a lightweight hawk. I can't say enough good about the folks at TGW either. Very friendly and quick email and they shipped the hawk with lightning speed.:thumbup: to TGW and the Mouse Hawk.

Thanks, I will search for that one.

I just got back from a weekend of hiking with my mouse hawk. The only complaint I have is that it has rusted some.I'll clean it up after I get off work on Wednesday.
