I recieved my new H&B Forge Mouse Hawk the other day.
My first impressions of it were that it was REALLY small. It comes in at a featherlight 10 oz.I thought it was too small to be a useful chopper. The edge didn't help either.it was very thick and not terribly sharp.
So I went to work with my stones and in not too long a time I raised a sharp edge that satisfied me.(I'm very picky with edges).
I went into the local woods looking for a good test for this small hawk and I found it in a slim birch tree.
(scale shot with a Fallkniven S1)
I found that it was a lot easier than I thought to chop with.It plowed through the tree with a reasonable amount of effort. The biggest complaint is that it was a little light so I needed to put more force than a heavier hawk would have needed to chop.
All that said it handled the job quite well and I'll have no problem taking it on my 4 day hiking trip with me as my camp chopper. It also holds a great edge.after all the chopping it only needed very little touching up with a ceramic stone.
Best of all it cost only 17.99$ so I'm not out too awful much if something befalls it on the trail.
This won't be my last purchase from H&B.I'm looking at the Scout or Shawnee hawk for my next hawk purchase.
