H.E.S.T Passaround Review Thread

The pics on here are awesome guys. I was referred over here by Tarditi I think. Thanks a million. This is gonna be the new beast...when I get the funds :(

*Bump*

All the HEST folder talk reminded me of this.

Seems like we are down to the last guy on the list?
Lol I'll be honest, I still care because there was going to be a drawing to see who kept it. If it's not me then I gotta buy one.

Well, here I am!! I got the HEST today, just a couple of hours ago. First impressions are, fits my hand like a glove and it just exudes toughness. The edge came with a decent edge, but after 10 minutes with my SM, it is now hair-popping sharp. Haven't done anything with it but open some mail and it did that really well, easily and cleanly slitting the envelopes.:D

Anyway, my plans for the HEST are to use it exclusively for the next week or two. I work in an office, so daily chores will be pretty mundane, but I also have a decent sized yard with lots of foliage, so I will be able to play around with it out there to see how it handles yard work and general outdoor duty.

So stay tuned for my final review with pics around in the next week or two.

I'll bet that knife looks well used by the time it gets to its eventual owner!

Yes sir it does!! It's got some nice character at this stage. The final owner will be getting on badazz knife for sure.

Ok, so after having this knife for a few weeks and carrying it around for about two, I have come to the conclusion that it's a great knife for it's intended purpose. As a last ditch, easily concealable survival tool/weapon it is really awesome. It also makes a decent and very capable FB EDC. It came to me fairly sharp, but with just a little time on the Sharpmaker, it whittles hair and cuts nice curls in paper.

I used the HEST mostly for mundane, EDC tasks around the office, home and yard. For most of that stuff, it worked just fine. I really like the way it rides in my pocket which is better than my Izula (rides too deep) and my RC-3 (too high).

I also really, really like the way this knife feels in the hand. The handle length and width feel "just right", again making comparisons to my Izula and RC-3.

The blade is thick at the spine and obviously very tough and able to withstand alot of abuse. But as already mentioned, like all ESEE's, the fantastic grind and killer 1095 steel allows this bad boy to get laser sharp with little effort. This thing really fits the bill for "sharpened prybar" in the very best sense of the phrase. Here's some shots comparing the width to my Izula and RC-3.

And some general comparison pics with my well-loved and often abused Spyderco Rock Salt as well as some other popular Spydies (Millie and Manix 2)

And finally, one last picture of the HEST with my RC-3 and Izula.

So, in summary, I feel the HEST is a great knife with some bells and whistles that actually work (bottle opener, storage between scales), as well as one that didn't work all that well (pry bar pommel). But with that stout blade, I would have no problems prying with it, within limits of course. In a survival situation, urban or wilderness, it would be a very welcome, useful and comforting addition that is easily carried and concealed if need be. As a general EDC, I also feel it is a handy and very useful tool, but the thick blade takes just a bit away from it's slicing ability.

As I said in an earlier post, this is one badazz knife and whomever wins it, is one lucky S.O.B.!

Nice review and comparison pics Billy.

rofl that took forever, but by heck we got it done in the end.

Yup, it's finally over. I have to go through the thread and then do the drawing to see who the winner is!

Yea, I have seriously neglected this thread.

I finally got up the gumption to go through it, write down the names, put them into a hat and have the Beav pick a winner for the knife.

Billy516, your keeping it brother. I think this is the second passaround I've done where the last person on the list won the knife.

Congrats!

Thanks everyone for taking part, it was a long strange trip for this blade but I think it enjoyed it.

Congrats Billy! Thanks for all of the good pics and reviews that came from this pass around. Not that I really needed much help but it made me finally pull the trigger on a HEST.

WHOOO HOOOOO!!!! Totally stoked to have won this awesome knife. Many, many thanks to the forum and especially those who had the knife before it came to me. You all did a fantastic job of breaking it in and "personalizing" it.:D It will hold a special place in my collection.

Hell Billy won because he’s the only person on the pass around that is still a member here. The rest have left, been banned or keeled over. :D

Just shy of 14 months to pass a knife around. Did you guys hand deliver it or something? :D
