H1 blade steel experiences? good for edc?

That mariner blade looks awesome. They need to make a production model with that tip and serrations.

Thanks! It was modded by Waterstone blades here on the forum; I was really impressed with how sharp the point & serrations are on this knife. Beyond anything I've ever handled previously.

Smooth as butter too in opening and closing.

I have the pacific salt and dragon fly, both plain edge, and have been pleased with the trade-off of no maintenance, that is after it has had some use. Out of the box, H-1 is too soft. Thru use and especially sharpening, H-1 gets harder. A very noticeable difference after only a few sharpenings -- much better edge retention.

From a woodcraft perspective, the dragon fly is as small I will go in having an EDC which will carve wood and make decent enough shavings for fire in wet weather.

I notices it dulled cutting air until I sharpened it a few times (use a Ken Onion Work Sharp). Each time I sharpened it I seemed to get harder and better edge retention on my Salt Plain Edge. This confirms what I read on the forums. Perhaps when the serrations are cut it is hardened and that is why that version works so well out of the box??

It is not possible for a person to harden H1 through sharpening.

The issue regarding H1 getting supposedly harder due to sharpening was discussed in significant depth on The Spyderco forum.

The theory and experience however indicates that after a few sharpenings the slightly damaged edge from power sharpening is removed hence the increase in performance.

Love the modded Mariner, and I didn't even know they MADE the Rock in H-1! Perfect for camping on the beach I guess. I don't think of Spyderco as a fixed blade company but the only fixed blade I have from them (Street Beat) is awesome. I really like the lines on the Rock, I may have to pick one up....

I've had mine for years, the characteristics haven't changed. That's not to say they aren't good knives, they are sharp enough for most practical needs.

I have a pacific salt serrated and have absolutely beat the heck out of it. That knife just keeps on cutting. I don't want to speculate what happened but it is very unusual for H1 serrated to roll. Just my 2 cents....and that's all it's worth. LOL

Not really. I rolled one of my aqua salts serrated edges badly and easily in a few strokes cutting a dried sabal palm frond. Should have went and got a saw.......but learned the hard way to use right tool for the job routine.

I was able to unroll the teeth with a sharpening steel. Took forever but it turned out fine. I have attempted to roll other serrated fixed blade steels on sabal palm fronds. Haven't been able to replicate it on cheap chinese steel serrated fixed blades yet...but i did on a gerber 06 chinese steel assisted opener on a plastic bottle. I think it was due morr to the shape and design of the serrations than the steel or heat treat itself or alone. Just a feeling though. No science to prove yeah or nay.

All that said i really like h1 but it scratches easily and looks ugly fast. Its not for everyone or everything as i have learned.

Thanks; it is an awesome folder. The Rock Salt is an excellent blade too and all of Spyderco's fixed blades I've owned have been top notch.

That's not ugly at all; in fact I quite like it especially the wave mod. :thumbup :)

I waved my full serrated ZDP endura 4, it sees daily carry and use now; probably my favourite serrrated knife I own too. Opening up the wave hook a bit on yours with a round diamond bit/file will decrease the likelihood of it snagging and getting stuck on a pocket seam FWIW.:cool:
