I want to get a spyderco that has the almost rust resistant steel h1. How is it fot cutting tasks? Cutting plastic zip-cords, bags, cardboard, and cord? I would EDC it anywhere near water....and is the yellow bright?

The H1 isnt almost rust resistant Masteroffajitas - it's completely rust proof as far as I can tell and a few reviewers have proven. I've used a couple of different H1 spydies in and around the sea for the last few years and so far I can't see a downside.

A yellow handled atlantic salt has become my EDC 90% of the time - mainly because I find that blade/handle size perfect for my needs. It is clipped to the back of my board shorts for the entire summer and is worn for snorkelling, sea-kayaking and fishing. The salt series are competely maintenaince free apart from the occasional rinse to get rid of sand.

H1 takes a wicked edge - as good as anything else I sharpen, even VG10 (my favourite steel). Edge holding seems to be just below VG10, slightly better than SAK steel. I've heard that this improves with sharpening as the steel work-hardens and I think this is the case with mine athough I never let my user/edc become too blunt in the first place (sharpening is a fetish of mine:D), so I can't really tell.

I use my A-Salt a few dozen times per day for jobs ranging from cutting fruit, cutting nylon rope and string, cleaning grass wound-up in my brush cutter, cleaning small fish (occasionally), breaking down cardboard etc. At the end of the day it's no longer shaving sharp but still cutting effectively. 5-10 minutes with a diamond coated ezy-lap and it shaves hair again.

I hope that gives you some idea of it's edge holding properties.

I carry this knife when ever im in the water.
I just clip it to the sleave of my wet suit and its all good.
H-1 is great it just wont rust at all and has pretty good edge holding and sharpening is easy too.
Iv never "lost" the knife but if it went wayword im sure it would be pretty easy to spot.
The yellow is bright and easy to see in the water, or any where.

ive really been pondering picking up an h1 model. i really have no "need" for a rust proof knife, but the idea of a rust proof knife sure is cool.

you guys with all your glowing reviews of spydies suck!

:)

I have been carrying daily a Pacific Salt full serration on the job for about eight months now after doing so with a VG-10 Endura for over 10 years.
I can say that it does have a little less edge retention than my VG-10 (my favorite) Endura, but will touch up very quickly on the spot or at the end of a 12-36 hour shift with a Smiths pocket diamond hone.
I use it on 1"-2" hemp tag line, burlap, heavy palm fiber mats (they call them coco mats),3/16-1/4" cardboard, nylon webb slings, 150lb cable ties(tip ties), heavy plastic sheeting,10k psi flex hose.
I am still undecided on weather or not this H1 will replace my field worthy VG-10 just yet, but so far it is still in my pocket and still seems to be holding up to the work and environment. No pitting, no rust, just an occasional wipe down with fresh water when ever I remember to or get the chance, and that could be two or three days sometimes, on the job.
Oh, I work offshore on intrevention vessels(ROV boat), semi submersible drilling/installation rigs and production platforms as a subsea controls service hand, international and domestic, any where from two weeks to a month at at time.

How about the internal components of the H1 folders like pacific. Are those rust-proof as well?

I've never had any of the parts rust, with the exception of the logo, which is kind of ironic :D

All of the internal parts are treated as well, but I believe it's just the main blade that is H1. There are other forms of metal that are rust proof as well, just H1 is one that has it all, good edge holding, takes a great shape, and can be sharpened.

I'll edit in a few pics once they've loaded up.

IIRC all the pins and lock bar are also made of H-1 (or similar), the clip is Titanium. It used to be coated stainless, but coatings wear off so they switched to make the "rust proof" statment true of every part.
With the newer Rock Salt they even have rust proof screws to hold the handle together (which is nice because it allows you to switch the handle scales).

Since purchasing my Pac Salt last month, it's been in my back pocket nearly every day since. I'm in love with the blade, and am thinking of picking up a Salt 1 in the near future (I like blades around the 3" neighborhood). I haven't sharpened/used it enough for it to significantly work-harden just yet, but there is a certain peace of mind that comes with not having to worry about the rust monster.
