Hey Guys
I've been interested in trying the Spyderco salt series for a while but can't decide which one to go with. I like larger blades but that still leaves a lot of options let me know what you recommend. Serrated or not? Back or yellow? Fixed of folder? Is the serrated edge really harder if so how much and is it worth going that way? Does Stropping impact hardness? I have had a Spyder edge Native and liked it so I'm not opposed to Spyder edge.

I've got a Tasman SE, Spyderhawk SE, Pacific Salt PE, Aqua Salt SE, and an Ark PE. I like me some H1. Go with the full sized Pacific Salt uncoated SE.

I have a Salt Dragonfly with serrated edge only, it's a great "big little knife" and for a truck knife/glove box knife it can't be beat, bright yellow easy to find, serrated edge stays sharper longer, lightweight, corrosion resistant . What's not to like? I'd say go for it, you won't be disappointed.

The alternative to the H Series would be a Boye prophet in his Dendritic Cobalt alloy, try to find one let alone afford one especially since the fire destroyed his shop a little over a year ago.

I am in and around salt water much of the time and hence a fan of the SALT seried in H1. I have heard, though not necessarily experienced that the serrated edge works better with H1 but I prefer a plain edge for many reasons - not the least of which being ease of sharpening.

Serrated H-1 has vastly better edgeholding than plain edge H-1. This has been verified by CATRA testing at Spyderco and in the field by many users. Pacific Salt is my favorite out of my Salts, all of which are fully serrated.

+1... to all of that!

If I needed a Salt series knife it would be the Pacific Salt fully serrated with a yellow handle.

I have no experience with H1, but it seems most prefer it serrated.

My little ARK is a slicing machine, but PE H1 doesn't hold an edge as long as many modern knife steels.
Sal has said Spyderco will be testing a SE version.

I was looking at those the other day as well.

I'm thinking that if you specifically need the serrated edge go for it, but if it really doesn't matter then I'd probably go plain edge for ease of sharpening. If you mean serrated edges are harder to sharpen, yes. You will have to use a little rod or something inside each of the little grinds. Way more time consuming than sharpening across a straight edge.

If you have a Sharpmaker, resharpening a serrated Spyderco edge is very easy. In H1, I definitely prefer SE over PE.

Oh, I've never tried a sharpmaker, spent all my money on a wicked edge and extra rods, base etc.

If there is an easy way to sharpen the serrated edge than that could change the game completely. Thanks for the info.

Yeah, it's really easy to keep 'em sharp.

I would personally get the pacific salt in pe with yellow scales. I prefer a larger knife, i know that se performs better however if i needed to sharpen with something when not at home i would have an easier time with pe.

Depends on what you want to use the knife for?

Well a plain edge ARK will wreck someone's day.

A serrated one will wreck their whole week.

I've got the plain edge dragonfly and have had no problem with it getting dull to quickly.. The edge retention feels similar to cold steels aus 8, and a quick strop at the end of the day brings it back to being screaming sharp.
I say go with whatever you like, I don't think you'll be disappointed.

I love spydercos serrations. I think they are some of the best out there and them with h1 is a winning combo.

Pacific Salt, SE, you choose the handle colour.

Great blade for multiple cutting tasks, grippy handle, comfortable size, impervious to rust.

I went ahead and reduced the back hump on my PS, much pointier on the tip now- fantastic knife to use.

I've got several H1 Spydies (Tasman, Spyderhawk, Pacific), my absolute favourite is the plain edge Pacific with yellow handle. It's like a rust-proof Endura, and since it has no liners it's even lighter. I tried serrated edges and they are just not my thing, a nicely polished plain edge works best for me.

Edge holding leaves a bit to be desired, but in my area's summer weather it's well worth the trade for corrosion resistance.

I've got a little serrated Ladybug Hawkbill Salt, it's quite capable for its size. Sharpening it is a breeze using the Sharpmaker, I think it's definitely worth getting the serrated version with H1, given everyone's reports how it stays sharper longer than the plain edge one. Also, can't go wrong with the iconic yellow colour, it makes the knife very difficult to misplace.
