H1...

Looking to get my first H1 Spyderco folder. I am not a fan of the FRN handles. Are there H1 folders available with G-10, micarta, CF, Titanium or H1 handle scales?

The Mariner has metal handles. I'm not sure what kind of metal, though.

The Mariner Salt is a great knife. I have had one for about a month and it is quickly becoming a favorite.

The handle is "100% Rust Free Stainless Steel". This is what the catalog and website list it as. I also e-mailed Spyderco directly trying to find out the type of steel it was, but got the same answer from them - "100% Rust Free Stainless Steel". So whatever it is - they ain't saying. I really don't care if the handle is H1 or not. Whatever it is it does not rust, just like the H1 blade its attached to. I have intentionally left it wet, dirty, etc, to see if I could get any rust spots. But so far none at all.

Thank you for the replies. The Mariner looks great, but I am not a fan of the blade shape. I was thinking of a blade similar to the Pac Salt or even the Tasman Salt.

Well then you're out of choices. What's wrong with FRN anyway? I like it... it is tough, durable, and lightweight.

I love my Salts. I have both an Atlantic and Pacific SE

Here's a thought... see if STR can build you G10 scales for one of the Salts?

Learn to love the FRN. It's not a hard thing to do .

Keep in mind that to create a G-10/ Micarta rustproof knife would be if not challenging, at least very expensive. Rust proofing liners, screws, back spacers.... Lotsa $$$$

As the previous posters said, if you haven't yet, you should really try out FRN for a while. Their is little to no performance decrease between FRN and G-10.

Hey jason. There is nothing wrong with being creeped out by frn personally I can't stand it either, but the salt knives are very nice and while 'imho' the frn is a second choice it is still a very good second choice. Really the salt would serve well, last a long time and be very reliable the only down side is that every time you touch it you will think "Why isn't this availabe in carbon fiber?"

This is your best choice. STR is a custom knifemaker and modifier who does excellent work on Spydercos. He has a subforum here.
