Hachets: Gransfors VS Council Tool UPDATE

Id say make sure they both have a good edge and just start chopping:thumbup: A good chopping session wont hurt either..Find out which one has better edge retention..I know what steel GB uses..Its akin to american 1055 carbon steel..I have the metallurgical breakdown saved somewhere..0.54% carbon, water quenched @ appx 1500* and tempered @ appx 385* so its deffinitly a medium carbon simple steel..
Id guess that council uses something close..I do like the profile of the GB hatchets..

Kentucky, you think the temper temperature is so low because the carbon content is on the low side?

yes, you are right on..That would still leave 1055'ish steel fairly hard.I think they list thier edge hardness at about RC57.1055 is a good steel but too keep it on the hard side they wuld have to temper it in those temperature ranges..
Cigga is the one who gave us the chem make up of that steel.Said he uses it himself...The heat treat is on Gransfors own literature..Id say the chem make up Cigga gave was right on with that particular heat treat..
Its a propriatory steel with .54C, some manganese and a little silicone if Im not mistaken..Ill look to make sure..

Great comparison. I bought the Council hatchet for my dad and brother at christmas and was very impressed with them for the money. I'm not a fan of the aluminum wedge either but they haven't came lose after some decent use. Thanks again.

And as a swede i think that i have to defend the Gransfors. It looks like the axe is the Little forrest axe, and i belive that its not a chopping axe (I got one) . Well it works good as a chopping axe, but it is more of a swedish version of a bushknife. Gransfors says the design is inspired from axes used in lumberjacking (but this one i downsized), not to cut down the trees but to cut of branches of pines and spruces after the are on the ground. I think it is way the edge is slightly curved to allow a more cutting action then chopping action and its sleeknes to be easy to handle. Gransfors have a axe the call small chopping axe which i hanvent tested but i belive it not that sleek even though its small.

What do the Gransfors Axe cost i the states? It costs 70 USD here in Sweden

Since you asked; What I would like to see tested here is the edge retention capabilities of both. Do an equal amount of wood processing with both, and on the same type of wood to keep it fair. "Then" get back to us with the results of which stayed sharp longer, and remained easy to cut with longer.
My money is on the GB. ;)

Did you get across the crick yet, Lane????

To me this is just a simple hatchet vs. hatchet comparison. Nothing complicated. Which one works better? If it's the GB, is it enough better to justify the extra cost? Obviously, it's all going to be subjective regardless of what you do. It's an opinion, which is the bottom line in all reviews and comparisons. Sometimes we act like it's objective based on testing...it's still just an opinion. I say drop the points system. Do various tasks: chop, split, carve, make tent stakes, pound tent stakes, etc. Which one works better for which tasks? Based on what you want the hatchet to do, which one would you rather carry in the woods regardless of price? Which one would you rather carry into the woods considering the price? Those are the types of questions that I would address.

And for the love of all things decent...let's all just have fun with this.

At the cheapest outlet I know, this morning a 14-inch Gransfors Wildlife hatchet is 118.99 USD. The Council 14-inch Hunter's axe is 24.99 USD. So it's quite a difference.

These are what I will be trying to do. I am going out tomorrow to do this.

There is a manager at work who wants to buy my gransfors, hopefully he doesnt come in today and give me an offer I cant refuse. If he does well... you will only see the council I guess.

L4n4 - sorry man. You are trying to do something good here - and I come rolling in and try and crash the party. I apologize. Unacceptable. Common theme for me here lately. Sorry man. I look forward to seeing the results - it will be a little while before I see them though - and thats ok.

Keep it up. Compare, review, etc. I apologize. Make it "the best review ever"

Sorry.

Mike
