Hello.
I carry a vic Spartan SAK day-to-day, and I'd like to know if anyone, anywhere has done any kind of modifications to any of the SAKs described here.

Specifically, what I want to do is

  • change the handles to wood (or horn if I can get my hands on some)
  • swap some of the tools with vic tools from other models (eg change the small knife on the spartan for the scissors on the climber)

If anyone has done anything similar, or any mods at all, I'd be very interested. Speculation regarding tools, etc also very welcome.
thanks,
-h.

replying to myself, but someone else may find it useful in the future: modding shop.

EDIT:
removing handles (or 'scales' as they are apparently called).

EDIT2:
(I still need info re: changing tools, though it's less urgent now as I've found a good SAK for my purposes (FYI, the vic climber))

I will google before posting. I will google before posting. I will google before posting.

You can definately mod a SAK, but you won't be able to get the scissors into the space the small blade leaves. The scissors go in their own layer and the backspring only allows the single tool and sometimes the parcel hook on the spine side of the knife.

Wood scales are no problem and it looks like you found Tom's website which is a great place to get the stuff you need to do the job.

woo, whaddaya know, leave it three days and then it comes alive! I hope the same thing happens here.

Thanks for replying!

scibeer: yeah, that's what I thought; a shame but no biggie. In actual fact I wasn't thinking of changing the small knife even though that was my example... I was just getting carried away with ideas, speaking of which, I take it it's also pretty easy to add new layers.. yeah. must be.

MSCantrell: nice. very nice. Was the wood from the SOSAK shop? I ask because the images on that site aren't very detailed, but if the scales look like that then I'm sold. (I understand if you'd rather not say)

I had a potentially interesting idea, but it's beyond my skill level at the moment: a hinged scale (2 tiny hinges placed on the bottom of the knife (that is to say, the corkscrew side) - you could keep needle and thread or whatever you wanted in the gap, really, depending on the depth of the scale. The 'lid' would have to click shut to be practical but maybe a small drilled hole in the frame and a small bit of the scale could protrude into the hole to fasten it (better ideas welcome). Anyway as I said it's beyond my ability (and needs) right now, but I thought I'd share the idea.

thanks agains for replying,
-h.

I presume that Victorinox & Wenger use as many common parts as possible to reduce overheads, so I think if you study the design of the various models carefully, you could probably come up with some custom variations.

yeah, that was my idea, though what you said implies interchangability between Vic and Wenger, which I'd be suprised to see.
Having said that, they both seem to have comprehensive enough ranges to cover all possible combinations without too many exceptions; if anyone has a "I always wanted a SAK with this tool" idea I'd be interested.

I'm going to be getting a new SAK for XMAS, so I'll take the old one apart and put back together (in a different order perhaps) and take photos for future reference.

Sorry for the late reply.

And sorry for the confusion too. I meant that I would expect each comapny to follow the same manufacturing philosophy, rather than both companies sharing parts. Although they're both owned by Victorinox now, Wenger are still being run as a separate company.
