There is a small waterfall on one of my hikes and for the longest time now I've been wanting to check out the bottom of it. The problem is that getting to the bottom means going down some very steep, loose valley sides......today however I took the plunge ! When I say plunge I mean that literally, my descent quickly turned into a Bear Grylls type landslide, everything I managed to grab hold of just ripped out in my hands !!!

In the pics it doesn't look very steep !

Once at the bottom this was the first thing that caught my eye, any ideas what it was ?

An old bottle sat on one side of it~

I made my way over the slippery rocks towards the bottom of the falls~

This time of the year there is very little water~

Now how to get back out !

After a bit of searching I found a slightly easier way back out !

On the way out I came across a large toppled tree, check out the resin !

This stuff was in thick slabs !

I decided this was a good spot to test out my latest knife a little, man this thing carves nicely, maybe it was particularly good wood but this knife was so easy to make controlled curls.

Spotted this family of Canada Geese as I headed back to the parking lot.

Great stuff.

That wooden pipe reminds me of something to divert water, maybe to use for panning/sluicing for gold.

Or it could have been used to divert water for a still operation? Interesting construction, with the round tongue and groove construction.

That wooden pipe is probably a water supply line for a log flume from back in the day. Don't know where on the island that is but odds are there was a logging operation or mill in the area at some point? Either way, nice pics!

Thanks, excellent photos.

Seeing as it was a Grylls moment, did you indulge in my creepy crawly dessert?

hey pit. great post. thanks for the pics. what knife is that? is that a gossman UNK? thanks.

Thanks buddy. It's a knife I drew up, Bruce Culberson made and I put the handle on !

yeah...i didn't think it was the UNK....just the only thing i could compare it to. from what i've heard/seen, bruce makes a great knife. that thing is awesome. nice job on the design/handle.

Hey Buddy, great little adventure and find. I have heard that locally folks use to use cedar to make pipes like we use PVC today to serve many of the same purposes. Actually, downtown Victoria the city is in the process of replacing old cedar pipes like that with PVC as we write this. Those old pipes are more than a hundred year old I was told and have been in use all this time. That is where your toilets flush through, bath and drinking water flow through. I agree with Big, likely someone was looking for gold there a while back in the days of the gold rush. Thanks for the share!

Dude! I slid like that once hiking to liumchien lake in the mountains past mission and broke a pinkie finger sideways and lost half of 2 nails stopping myself about 20 feet from going over a cliff.....dead. Had to roll on my belly and dig in with hands and boots, self arresting like on snow, scary stuff. Took 15 minutes of scrabbling and sliding to make it up. Lots of smaller cuts and scrapes all over my hands grabbing for life.
The small section of rough trail on a very steep exposed slope gave way and all the vegetation below was still bowed over from the recently melted snow and was like a greased waterpark slide in the light rain.
Had to stop and make some soup to calm my nerves for like an hour and a half before moving on back home. The way my hands were beat up an afternoon of trout fishing lost its charm.
Definitely a "what if" scenario

Nice pics and spot.

I just stumbled upon the thread, but I wanted to say thanks for sharing. Very nice pictures and a cool adventure to boot.

Beautiful pictures! And I like that mossy forest. Good thing there were no thorny plants you grabbed on to! Thanks for sharing!

I had a Bear Grylls moment last week too!

I stayed at a Motel 6. :D

Great pics! I've only made it out to the island once, but (like everyone in Alberta) if I could get a job out there, I'd go right back.
