I had been searching for some new trails to explore and found an area not too far from where I usually go. My wife and I had been hiking for a couple of hours when we stopped to have a snack.

We were right next to a dry creek bed when I heard running noises coming from our right. A large deer sprinted out of the creek bed and across the trail right in front of us, maybe only 10 feet away. Right on the deers tail was one of the largest coyotes I've seen. I thought the coyote was gonna get his lunch right there, but the deer made a sharp turn and headed up the steep hillside. The coyote couldn't make the climb though. He stopped, turned to look at us and then headed off in the opposite direction.

We just watched in amazement, it was like being in the middle of a Marty Stouffer special! I wished I would have had my camera out, but it happened so quickly. But it was one of the neatest hikes I've had.

We had some prickly pear cactus along with beef jerky and some cheese

Brought the Project W and a new knife from Joe Hargis, it;s a sweet little cutter too.

My wife was a little freaked by the coyote, so she wanted to carry the Laconico

It started to rain so we headed back, but it was a great day and I'm glad I found this spot.

cool cool, I'm liking that laconico more and more.
The closest I been to a kill like that, was boating around on the Basketong reservoir lake, we stopped for a picnic on a remote island and there were wolf tracks all over the beach and lots of disturbance and blood.

That sounds pretty awesome bro! Bet that got the heart rate up for a second!

So, you didn't chase the deer down and show the coyote how to do it?
Nice knives, looks like it was a fun time. Very nice photos
The prickly pear cactus; did you eat it raw, or scorch it a little bit? Love that Hargis, I need one.

that would have been a cool site to see... we have a bunch of coyote's around here...

great pics T...

Great story - That would have been cool to witness.

Cool Laconico too!

Had it raw, it tastes like a cross between a green tomato and an apple. I have scorched them before to get the spines off, then cook them with scrambled eggs.

Aye that plant is castor. Hey T its amazing how many deer we have in the area...

Here's a few more knife shots just for the heck of it. One thing I really like about the Hargis knife is the sheath. I find clips much more useful than a belt loop, especially on smaller blades.

This area was burned last fall in the wildfires we had here.

Joe, you make a great knife. I really enjoyed using it and it's very light too.
