Had a heckuva scare tonight

Sometimes they just can not be avoided. Unless we drove 10 mph everywhere we went. I have learned to not watch the deer you see crossing, but to watch behind them for the one following them. That has helped me avoid horny bucks this time of year. They are so worked up they will follow a doe anywhere.
I was extremelly lucky one night. Travelling at 60 mph I had a deer sprint into the road in front of me. The deer jumped into the air and I drove under it. Most people don't believe me, but it happened. Like lightening in a snow storm, it happened I swear!

Berkley's right deer are deadly and they kill more people every year in the US than any other animal including Bears. In Alaska these collisions are a source of food. We have a lottery for the meat. Moose is on the list and a favored item.

But more important is (as all have said) your OK Karda and your family.

Wow! very glad to hear you and your son are alright...Sad about the deer though. I was riding my Ducati around a tight curvy stretch of mountain road a while back, not much room to get up on it (thank God). When all of a sudden I had a deer leap across the road right in front of me and i just missed it, I seriously must have fudged my huggies. There's absolutely nothing that can be done in those instances. Glad you were protected by your car and you and your son are safe.

I believe it because I've had it happen. I was driving home from Kansas City on a 2-lane highway my freshman year of college at about 8pm in October. My car was a 1966 Mustang, so it sat nice and low to the ground. I saw one deer run across the road in front of me in my headlights, and then suddenly I saw hooves sailing over the hood of my car as the second deer jumped over my car. I was only going 55mph, but I slowed down for the rest of the drive home.

Glad you guys are all ok. Deer are a big hazard here in rural/semi-rural VA too. You would have sold, traded, or scrapped the car eventually, ;).

Thanks guys!
Went to the Yard to get the plates and took some pics.

This is what it looks like hitting a huge Doe at 55mph......

@ Steve Tall- Still waiting on the Claims inspectors, most of them are down in NJ/NYC taking care of biz down there. I've already sourced used parts which will cost about $360, now we wait to see what the insurance says. The worst damage is the top crossmember holding the radiator. I'm not sure i can bend it back out myself.

Glad to hear you're all okay. I had a deer come out in front of me on a very cold winter's night a couple years back. Very large doe, hit her going about 35 mph. Deer was toast, and my truck had some front end damage. That was a nice $500 ride home from the girlfriend's house. But hey, it could have always been worse.

Glad everyones ok I live in a rural town and the deer here too are very over populated, check out those little whistles you put on the sides of your car, They are available at an automotive store and you just attach them to your side view mirrors, it's like a dog whistle and they are supposed to scare deer and other animals as you drive, I personally have never tried them but a few friends have them and swear they'd never drive around here without them, I've heard that they have seen the deer actually running away and it works for dogs as well. Like I said I never tried it but I've only heard positive things, might be worth looking into. On another note my grandpa was sitting at a stop sign with his passenger window down, a deer ran into his truck head came into the window and it was a buck the deer thrashed around and tore my grandpas interior up also the dent on his door has huge, and he was sitting still! The deer population is really getting over populated they should extend deer season especially doe days, we need some serious population control down here, plus some good eating too!

LOL.... Believe it or not, There were deer whistles on the front bumper. I don't think they really help very much.

glad to hear you guys are ok. the car looks like it can be fixed so i doubt if they total it.

It sucks. A few years ago we hit a 400 pound elk at 75 mph in a chevy tahoe. Surprisingly noone was hurt but the elk and truck weee toast

Thanks guys!

Glad to hear everyone in car made it safe, blessings to count

Glad you're allright Karda. Looks like the front end of the frond end of the car did just what it was designed to...save your lives.

Glad you and rest of family made are safe.

Well they totalled the car. It looks like we're going to buy it back and fix it. I wish i could've gotten it back a bit cheaper, but we will make do.
Maybe this was a blessing in disguise, despite the loss of life to the deer. I wish that werent so, but i couldnt avoid her.
When life throws you lemons, make lemonade, i guess.

well, that's a surprising thing to have happen. not a good one.

around here, if you nail an animal, be it a moose, deer, beaver, whatever, 99% of the time, it's yours ...

course, nobody smart tries it on purpose with moose :P
