Hey Guys...

Almost caught an interesting bird yesterday in the yard..
Had it cornered,, but flew up onto the barn and got away...

It was a Chukkar, a bird much like a Bobwhite Quail, but the size of a Grouse..

I have No idea where it came from, never seen one before, and they aren't native to here..

Must have escaped from somewhere...

There is a little bedroom community, just east of Regina, called White City. They have had chukkars out there for several years now and nobody knows where they came from

sometimes game preserves stock species like that for special hunting parties...and sometimes they escape...I saw a ringneck pheasant in Central Park the other day....I assuming he escaped from the childrens zoo.

Hey Guys...

Thanks..
Interesting..

Yaa I'm wondering myself if it escaped from somewhere..Will have to ask the guy next door and see if he has any...

What a cool little bird though..
If they would survive,, I'd raise them and release them in the back..

Troop...

Would need a few more :)

are you sure that it was not a Chicken?

they do come in all types, sizes, and colors.

Hey Guys..

555..

No,, I'm pretty sure it wasn't a chicken... :)

It was like a Magnum Quail and when it flew it had a glide like a Grouse

Besides I looked it up in the Peterson's Guide to Western Birds

They would probably survive, their native habitat is mountainous desert in Pakistan. When I was a kid, I worked seismic in Alberta. I ran into a farmer there that kept something called guinea fowl. I asked her what she used them for and she said "the usual, food etc. and they make great watch dogs" They were her rural alarm system.

Eric,

I use them all the time to train the dog. They taste great too!!! They have caught on in Montana and Idaho here in the states. They are a fun bird to hunt.

When I was younger I spent time exploring around Inwood Park (all the way uptown in Manhattan) and I saw pheasants there numerous times.

Maybe these guys will end up around scogog area in a few years. How do they taste compare to other upland birdys?

Ringnecks have been around the city for ages.
I've been seeing them in the cemetary belt (Brooklyn/Queens border) at least 30 years now. Probably more, but that makes me feel old :grumpy:
Central park has an amazing number of bird species...ask any of the "birders" you see there. Usually in the early AM & carrying binos :D

Raccoons, rabbits, huge snapping turtles, hawks, falcons are all regulars in Central Park.

As for the chukkar...critters adapt.
They get squeezed out of somewhere, they go somewhere else

Hawks and Falcons are staples on the 400 series highways around here. They are the coolest part about sitting in traffic after work.
