Had It All in '84

Apropos of nothing whatever, realized today while driving into town to do the annual Blazer registration that with the Eye Brand lockback with primary clip point and secondary sawback blades I brought back from a military rod & gun club overseas in '76, and the Ka-Bar & Swiss Army Grand Prix knives I acquired in '84, I had every knife I'll ever really need for my lifestyle 26 years ago.
And yet, I somehow seem to think I should be getting more to just sit around & never go anywhere.

There are others that may be more convenient, and certainly prettier, but the three mentioned could get me by till I die.

I'm not a collector, this nonsense should stop. Got enough clutter around here.
I'm reaching the "clear it all out now" age & stage. :)

Anybody else in the same boat?

Denis

Me too - I had it all in 83-84.

Sad isn't it - it only took 26 years and lotsa $$$$$$$ to come to the conclusion.

This is a common state among codgers and aspiring codgers (which most of us are, considering the alternative is Death). Fortunately, there is a cure. Listen closely: Dozier... D-o-z-i-e-r-. Feel free to substitute Sbenza, Buck, Bark River, etc., etc. Now repeat it to yourself until you are compelled to go out and buy another new knife.

Im clearing out some of my less expensive and not used much knives for

more expensive knives I Am Using. Now Im using 7-8 as opposed to 30-35

knives.

Got some nice stuff, got some mediocre stuff, got some big stuff, got some small stuff.
Used to think I'd pass most of it on down, but off-spring & spouses aren't really much into knives & grandkids are not arriving in volume.

If I died tomorrow there'd be a mell of a hess for the wife & kids to sort out.

20 years ago I viewed parents & in-laws reaching the "clear it out" stage with amusement, now I'm there.

I'm thinking about getting down to 3-5 knives total - 1 fixed blade, 2-3 folders and 1-2 SAKs.

I think leaving my kids my favorites that I actually used and carried would mean more than leaving them a box of 50+ knives, some of which are still brand new.

when i hit 60 i sold most of my guns & A HUGE COLLECTION OF OLD SWORDS,RAZORS,stroups, straight & folding knives. funny i feel so good at 70 i started collecting again to fill in the boredom. accumulating knives has nothing to do with practical , it's all about fun & more fun. this is'nt my quote but i love it; "man does not live by logic alone"

If I stop accumulating knives, what would I do? My kids and grandkids will enjoy selling them all off!

Dennis,
I know, it's got nothing to do with practicality, but they don't even give me any real enjoyment, for most of 'em.
The things are spread out on two desks here in the office, in desk drawers, and downstairs in two different rooms in the basement.
I don't do anything with 'em, I rarely even see most of 'em. I don't even remember half of 'em until or unless I accidentally run across something that's been outa sight for one to five years. :)

Drastically re-aligned the guns last year, let a bunch of things that I realized I'd never do anything with again go.

Sno,
Our adult kids wouldn't have a clue about value on the knives & they'd have little interest in hanging onto most of them. The knives'd most likely be sold off for pennies on the dollar. Not knocking the kids, they're just in their own alternate realities that don't involve much in the way of blades.

I've turned 61 and can realate to every post made. I do have a severe craving to buy a knife and then before I hit the button, I stop myself and think why? I've got 3 tuppperware boxes full of new knives that no one cares about but me and I can't possibly use them all. Brand new in the boxes!

There are many that still appeal, and that I'd like to have. But then I have to stop & say the same thing- why?
I can't use 'em, I don't fondle in the house, my outside needs are met by the above three, and I just can't see much sense in getting any more to just sit & be ignored. :)

Ha! Does anyone (besides ninja assassins and gardeners) really need more than 2 or 3 knives? Probably not....

And yet, here we all are...

so use the other knives you have and not just the three. maybe then you will rediscover the pleasure you had way back then. I don't like safe queens and whatever knife I have will see at least a little use depending on how pleasurable I find it to use.

I wasn't allowed to have knives in '84 :grumpy:

I wasn't born in '84 :D

But I'm already reaching the same conclusions, why have so many and so much invested when only a few will do the job?

I'm not to that stage yet, and I hope I never am. There's nothing wrong with being practical, and if you or your heirs need the $ then do the right thing.

But you need to enjoy life. My grandparents and parents went through that stage, and then sat around wondering what to do with themselves until they passed away. The only happy one was the one that kept doing what he loved right up until his last days. An item for his collection came after he was gone. None of us knew what to do with it all, but it gave him happiness and it's not a big burden to deal with.

I guess I'm saying if you aren't getting pleasure from them then get rid of them, but if you are, don't let "practical cause I'm gonna go someday" keep you from enjoying the life you have.
