Had It All in '84

Jay,
Don't blame you, I didn't either. :)

Sing,
I'm not knocking those who like to collect or accumulate, but I've never been one to rotate just for the sake of rotation. That applies to guns as well as knives. I find something that works & pretty much stick to it. Changes in what I may have along vary by chore, not by a desire to just carry something different.
That gives me familiarity with what I use that increases my own efficiency & confidence with the tools.
I'd have to work my way through about 40 folders, eight large "choppers", six or seven medium fixed blades, half a dozen smallish fixed blades, three or four khukries, and several oddballs.

Chip,
None of the kids, or my wife & I, need the money. It's pretty much just a case of things I'll never use taking up space that can be better utilized.
I'm enjoyin' life, and letting most of this steel go wouldn't impact my outdooring in the slightest. :) And, it would definitely improve my indooring. :D
I don't need 40 folders, can get by with one larger chopper than the Ka-Bar, don't need that many medium fixed blades, and so on.

Yeah, 84, I wasn't very old back then.

I'm young enough that the world is still full of surprises.
Can't wait for the Kershaw Volt.

Apropos of nothing whatever, realized today while driving into town to do the annual Blazer registration that with the Eye Brand lockback with primary clip point and secondary sawback blades I brought back from a military rod & gun club overseas in '76, and the Ka-Bar & Swiss Army Grand Prix knives I acquired in '84, I had every knife I'll ever really need for my lifestyle 26 years ago.
And yet, I somehow seem to think I should be getting more to just sit around & never go anywhere.

There are others that may be more convenient, and certainly prettier, but the three mentioned could get me by till I die.

I'm not a collector, this nonsense should stop. Got enough clutter around here.
I'm reaching the "clear it all out now" age & stage. :)

Anybody else in the same boat?

Denis

I hear you, I'm stopping the hoarding before it starts. After a month on here I got myself up t 5 knives (6 if you include the MK5 ritter survival blade in my pocket survival kit). I just dumped a spyderco and a benchmade, and I think I am going to get rid of at least 2 probably 3 more knives. I hope to get down to just 1 in my hiking pack, and 1 in my survival kit.

Denis,

You need to see 'Hoarding: Buried Alive', TLC Sunday/Wednesday night, for the epitome of 'collecting stuff' and it's effect on folks. It's an eye-opener.

I'll start collecting SS benefits this summer - at 62. I've done the self reflection re firearms. I should do it in my knife collection, too. I could use the money, no doubt... but I need my sanity back more!

Freq,
I've got the bigger Ritter fixed blade, it'll probably stay, and probably in one of the UTV expedition kits.

For belt knives roughly that size, I was given a Cold Steel Pendleton Hunter recently that should fit nicely on the belt & does fit nicely in hand. I have better overall quality knives, but this little thing's really growing on me.

Went through a Big Blade Phase, found they're neither needed on a regular basis nor convenient to tote along.
One of the realizations I've come to is that most of my outdoor expeditioneering is done in the UTV nowdays, and a big belt knife just doesn't fit in the bucket seat.

After my sole experience with the hassle of buying a Busse, I found it didn't fit in the Yamaha & was too heavy to carry far on foot, sold it here last year.
Rarely go far on foot when I'm out there & if I need to build an emergency shelter I can use a bow saw or an axe carried by the Yamaha.
In looking back, I've NEVER needed anything bigger'n the Ka-Bar.
I do get out, but I don't hike the Appalachian Trail for weeks at a time.

Stainz,
Y'know, it was seeing the ads for that show a while back that contributed to the current "need-to-go" decision. :)

Dramatically downsized the guns, jettisoned many that had been sitting for up to six years & some that had been acquired with intentions but had never been fired by me at all, re-organized with a view towards those with clear appeal and/or projected actual uses.

Some things I've acquired over several years with a "Someday I'll..." thought at the time have just never found that "Someday", and the number of "Somedays" left ain't nearly as high as it was when I was 30. :)

As for sanity, that's a whole nuther issue.

This thread sounds all too familiar; just stopped short of ordering a new Buck this morning; am having the same discussions with myself about all the guns that are never fired and all the knives that are never used; not sure I am to the point of stopping buying knives but.............

My buying frenzy died down once I got my first Benchmade AXIS lock knife---the first infinitely usefull knives I ever owned---there's been one in my pocket for years now with no need to keep on looking.

I'm slowly selling off or giving away knives that just don't see any use. The only knives I'll never get rid of are the ones given to me as gifts by my girlfriend and family. Even then, that gives me about 10 or so knives to choose from which is more than enough these days.

looks like what happens or doe,nt happen to each of us is the abundance or lack of abundance of enthusium when we handle our possessions. regardless of whether it's a knife or gun or fine duck decoys.if you do'nt feel that zing when looking or using whatever, then the magic is gone. when apathy or boredom dominates it's time to get meds or simply move on.
