Thos of you chipping on a Sharpmaker may be running the blade down the rods with too much pressure. You should be brushing down the rods, very gently. Otherwise, you'll end up with an irregular surface, which will damage all your blades. Easy does it.

About 25min on the sharpmaker's medium (dark) triangle & the chip/nick is completely gone:thumbup:...seems I made a mountain of a mole hill:o

Another 10-15min on the fine grit & my 635 is as good(or better)as new.

I can't believe I went so many years without the sharpmaker. It's so easy to use.

Feels good to get a chip out.

I was getting chips everytime I used BM'S S30v on my 740. Now that I have set a back bevel the edge is tough as nails.

My son dropped the knife on the concrete patio the other day. The edge was flattened, but not one chip. Five minuted later on the sharpmaker it was shaving sharp again.
:)

I suspect the high wear factor of S30V has led to lots of overheated edges.
Now that you've sharpened past that heat damage (probably), it should last the way it is supposed to.
I have a Sebenza that had a very fragile edge, but once it was sharpened back a mm or 2 it was fine.
