Posted this elsewhere, but I thought Id share it with th RAT bretheren as well...
I am sitting at home, fresh from the ER. Totaled my truck this morning on the way to work. Hit an icy bridge, and wiped out at 70mph. Happened so quick, yet in slow motion.
Hit the concrete rail at 70, head on. Jammes my shoulder in the A post, and slammed my ribs into the steering wheel, and somehow managed to hurt my neck too. Got a nice lac on my forearm. I was worried I was gonna flip off the bridge, but am gratefull it didnt happen. I was able to get myself out of the truck, and out of the way of oncoming traffic.
Well I ended up having to deal with MY ambulance which showed up after a passer by called 911. Ill never live THAT down.
After I told them I was OK, and couldnt get ahold of my wife, who was home sleeping after working a double at the hospital, another wreck came across the scanner, AND then ANOTHER wreck!!! All in all, 3 wrecks within a 1 mile stretch of road. One guy was fine, the other broke some ribs and rolled over his truck. So I hopped in with my ambulance crew and helped as much as I could with the pts... Road into the hospital with em, which happens to be a block from my house, so I walked home from the ED, after getting checked out.
2 vicaden later, im a little spacy, and in alot of pain. Couldve been worse. Still now have to deal with my truck which is parked at a conservation parking lot. Ill have to wait till I can rest a bit.
I came really close to flipping my truck over the bridge into the Lamine River. Got me thinking, and im happy to know I had my BOB in the truck and wouldve faired ok If I was able to get out of the truck. An emergancy blanket, FAK, and firestarting gear is comforting to have. Also the Stanley Fubar is a great tool. I used it 3 times this AM. Once to pry my fender off so I could drive it on the rim off the roadway, and twice popping doors on the wreck I worked after my wreck. GREAT TOOL!! get one if you dont have one.. One scary thing is I had my Gossman PSK in my pocket in a Kydex sheath, and when I hit, the blade went through the bottom of the sheath and stuck in my cigarette pack, stopping it from going into my thigh... Crazy....
Well, just thought id share my crazy story......and stress the point that you never know whats gonna happen out there, with the cold weather upon us, be sure you update your gear you keep in the truck, adding more cold weather items.
be safe out there guys...
