So I had "Someone" make me a sheath for my bali that would be an in pants sheath... I asked for a fitted black leather sheath to ride at a small angle from horizontal. I got a Brown leather sheath made from extremely thick stock that was painted black (is this normal?)The size was about the size of the Benchmade box my knife came in...NOT FITTED and it was made to ride vertical.

LAME LAME LAME....

The question is what do I do about this?
I haven't paid for the sheath yet but I feel bad just saying "this thing sucks" and sending it back. Also it was very cheap so I kind of feel like I got what I will have paid for.

The main thing is that the sheath was so disappointing that it was almost laughable, I actually started to try and convince myself it was a bad joke for a while...I mean it was far from what I had imagined.
  :grumpy: :(

Did you see the maker's work prior to ordering one? and if so had he made any similar pieces? If yes and yes then he should have made the sheath to your specifications if no then there was a misunderstanding. In which case if it was cheap enough and the size seems kind of generic anyway, keep it but explain to the guy that that is not what you ordered and ask him to make a correct one for a discounted price. If he says no then keep the sheath and pay for it and never do business with him again.

The relevant issue is whether it was far from what you had agreed? Custom stuff is like this; it often takes a few tries to come up with somthing close to how we had envisioned it. Was it up to the maker's usual quality and price?

Have you contacted the maker about the problems? That usually is the first step and the majority will fix it.As a sheathmaker,I know most here and on other forums would take care of it.When we get leather it is natural colored and then dyed to finish. You may feel bad about the sheath but at least give the maker a chance to remedy the situation. If he doesn't, do no more business with him. Well the letter I wrote is on my work computer but that was one of the first things I looked at after I got the sheath... I was very clear... I also talked on the phone with the maker and it seemed we had a perfect understanding. The maker said specifically that it would be wet fit and so it would fit the knife and you may see the holes in the handle through the sheath...I imediatly pictured a sheath like the ones G2 makes but what I got was a BOX seriously the size of the BM box the knife came in. Almost exeact dimentions!!!

I hadn't seen the work before but i had been having trouble finding someone that would make this sheath for me. This person came recommended by people on the forum!

I ddin't mention this before but I was told it would take a week or two and it took a month. (insult to injury)

if ya arent happy, contact the maker, i bet he'll take care of ya, way too early for GBU imho, but again, if ya arent happy, work something out, i wouldnt pay for something i cant use/wont work, if its like you say, i wouldnt want it either, i have seen some really cool bali sheathsd like ya talk about, but i cant remember were i saw them,

Send it back. The sheathmakers I know here would make it right. If it's not what you ordered, dont accept it. But talk to the guy, might have been a misunderstanding.

Hi Knife, as DC Knives Dave said, most leather that you can form fit starts out as raw veggie tanned leather, that is usually brownish in colour and then dyed as the person would like, so it wouldn't be out of the ordinary to see on the inside the colour is light and the outside dyed black.

I'm with the other guys here, contact the fellow/gal and maybe just flat out say, as nice as you can, you need to send this back as it wasn't what you wanted or asked for.

I do appreciate you're thinking of my bali sheaths, I've made a lot of them but never an in the waist band one so not sure how they would work.

I'd also check with Lifter4Him, as I think he's made some IWB or would be willing to give it a shot?

Hope this all works out for you.

I agree with what has been said so far, simply write this fellow and ask either for a re-make or a refund. Most of us have a satisfaction guarantee, if your not happy, we're not happy. I have been making bali sheaths for years as has G2 and there is no excuse for you being unhappy. Let me know if he/she doesnt honor your request, I have a BM 4x Ti and a 42SS, I can mold you an IWB sheath, and I will do it at no charge. I havent done a bali sheath in a long time, it would be nice to do one for a change! All those sharpened pry bars makes me yearn for a simple bali........

I am serious about the sheath offer Knife11 and I would like some specifics on that maker, write me at armoralleather@yahoo.com or I will try to send you one today.....

Knife 11,

I'd take Dwayne (leatherman) up on his offer if I were you. I don't have one of his sheaths, but I AM wearing a belt that he made for me, and he does excellent work. With custom work, clear and complete communication is the key, and Dwayne is very good at that also.

Thanks for all the great advise, but I think I may just pay for the sheath and be done with it. The reason is that there was a metal clip that came with the sheath, I took off and used for something else. Second, I don't want to make the maker feel bad about the whole thing as we were getting along so well on the phone. I just wanted to pass it by you guys and maybe vent a little.

P.S.
Leatherman you have mail!

I read the GBU occasionally for the sqaubbles, but I've got to say when I read this one regarding the offer made by Leatherman, I am proud to be a member of this forum.

Yep, leatherman's one of the good guys. Never dealt with him myself, but this post here(plus others I've seen made by him) prove tht fact.

Thanks guys:) This is my livelyhood and I just cant understand when someone does something like that, but I see it a little too often, kind of self destructive nature I guess.

Heck I am slow as molasses sometimes;) but I do get the job done! hehe eventually:rolleyes:

lol!! David1967, that is an idea!!! Just use the old sheath for something else, recycling is a good thing!:p

Nic, thanks for the compliment, I appreciate it.
I agree with you guys about Duane(Leatherman), he is genuinely one of the good guys and his offer is extremely generous.

I have two bali sheaths made by Dwayne. Both are excellent.
Living close by does have advantages I guess.
First one he made was just by my discription. Perfect fit.:)

Heh, got it done! All there is to do is let it dry then the wax! I will get a pic as this one is a not too common type of bali sheath in leather. I've seen the kydex models but this is a first I've seen in leather.
Hope you like it Knife11, mail incoming for your shipping addy, it should go out next week. Let me know what you think and how it rides.
Dwayne
