Was in Wal Mart at the Sporting Goods counter, and there was a guy in front of me buying something, and his daughter, about 12-14, pointed at a Swiss Army knife in their display, and asked her dad if she could have one.

His reply..."No, you don't need a knife, your a girl"

:mad::mad::mad::mad::mad:

As a rule, I normally never comment or intrude on someone else's family stuff, but it took a lot not to say something!

...and someday, somewhere, another knife nut will have a wife/girlfriend that doesn't understand or appreciate the hobby, all thanks to one sexist childhood moment.

That man is a disgrace. the possibility is too high that the daughter is going to turn into a knife hater later in life because he daddy said she did not need a knife, and therefore no one else should.

wow. this ticks me off more than i was expecting. this is why i do not listen to rush.

Or a future rabid female knife nut! :D

That's what I am thinking, if she likes knives now then won't go away in the future.

Once she gets old enough she will end up getting her own.

I would have introduced him to a John Wayne style punch!

Not sure listening to Rush is going to make this or any other situation any better...

It is too bad that happened, but each family is different. My step daughter was into cutting herself at the age of 14 to 17. Not severe, but cutting none the less. Then she got into booze and drugs, now at 19, she is a tad bit better. I and I bought her a Kershaw Scallion. I told her if she ever cut herself with it on purpose, I would kick her butt. She is working now, and doing better, hopefully on her way to full adulthood. She has come along way, and giving her that knife somehow communicated to her that she can be a responsible and productive member of society. Edit to add: Well, at least in my own private Idaho that I call my brain. LOL

Apparantly he doesnt need a knife either. Im sorry but I would rather buy a knife instead of feminine products. Hope this guy really isnt an asshole otherwise she'll want a guy just like her asshole dad and repeat the cycle.

Thats sad everybody needs a decent knife imo, regardless of being male or female heck my mom even carries a knife.

My filter is weak so I probably would have said something. I may have not said something directly to him, but would have definitely shaken my head and said something out loud enough for him to hear me. Something like "Yeah, why would a girl ever need to use a knife for anything ever?"

Sorry to go OT but what does Rush have to do with this? If you're talking about their song Animate then you're mis-interpreting the lyrics. Read his book Roadshow, he explains it.

There is always Christmas and birthdays. :) SAK makes some starter knives without the sharp pointy main blade. Bought on for a 8 year old, but his Mom is sort of against it. So, I still have it.

I'm sure this guy will be proud when she grows up to do girl things like dancing with poles.

Hahahaha sounds about right.

I'm not sure that I would have kept silent. It's always a struggle to not say anything when I go to Big 5 for ammunition and see someone looking at their crappy Chinese ZT knockoffs.

Lol, this story reminds me of the opposite approach. My 2-1/2 year old daughter already knows how to open and close pliers on my swiss multitool and today she begged me to give her my sebenza after I cut some lint of her bunny toy.

Shame - my daughter takes her Vic Climber with her everywhere she can.

It makes no sense keeping someone from understanding how to use a knife because she's a girl.

My daughter loves whittling sticks and other craft projects where a good knife is needed.

I probably wouldn't have said anything either - I can't fix a lifetime of stupidity with one 5 minute conversation.

If he needed help picking out which model to get I would have chimed in.
