Had to bite my tongue today.

Being that the girl was 12-14 I'm hoping she'll rebel and become one of us hardcore knife knuts. Who knows, he may even have motivated her to become a custom knife maker someday ! It'll all depend on whether she's the 'go along' or 'go against' type. Being that most girls in our society today aren't particularly interested in knives, I'd say her asking for one improves the chances of her joining us someday.

If I was feeling bold or maybe if I were a bit intoxicated, I'd have slipped her one of my smaller edc's, winked, and left.

Sorry to go OT but what does Rush have to do with this? If you're talking about their song Animate then you're mis-interpreting the lyrics. Read his book Roadshow, he explains it.

I thought he was talking about Rush Limbaugh?

It might not be PC but I think all women need many knives each. Most of the women I know have at least one or two drawers full of knives. In the kitchen. :p :D If they wanted to carry one in their pocket books that would be fine with me too. I'm only kidding BCCL. Virtually everyone has and uses sharpened steel edges. Most on a daily basis. I don't know what some peoples problems are.

Chris,

Your instincts were right on both counts. You were right to want to say something, and you were right to hold back.

My daughter wanted her own knives when she noticed my interest. I have since given her a CRKT S2, Spyderco SS Cricket, Spyderco Perrin, and SAK - with pink scales.

Being a dad is the best! :)

For the father in the store: That's just sexist and sad, though I don't think intervening would have done much good. The vast majority of knife enthusiasts that I know are men, but edged tools have utility for and can be enjoyed by everyone. I've gifted Victorinox Rallys to my college apartment-mates (all women) and a Leatherman Squirt to my mother, and they have all found myriad uses for them. I'm very proud to say that my girlfriend always has her Leatherman Juice in her purse, and she was genuinely excited when I suggested we get matching engraved Opinels for our three month anniversary. ;)

Agreed, as far as knife nuts go, the more the merrier.

I never comment to people anymore regarding knives unless they ask.

This is how anti-knife rediculousness starts....bad training from the start.
Maybe when the young girl grows up she'll just get her own. At least she was interested in one :)

Recently I was with another maker, Pete Pruyn, at a Dutch Brothers coffee joint. He had some knives and blades laying on the table. Some knucklehead high school female, with her face painted like a cat, says "Why do you have 'weapons?'" I told her they were tools, in fact man's oldest tools, and then asked her why she had piercings (in her face). She decided that she'd had enough.

It was a cathartic moment. Didn't even have to ask why she was painted up like a cat.

My old "Battle Buddy" is now the proud father of four girls. The oldest just turned 12 and asked about having a knife of her own. Joe responded with the "you're a girl and you're not old enough for a knife yet" line.

I responded by ordering 5 SAKS in various styles and colors. I promptly gifted mommy and 4 daughters with new knives.

Joe was a bit pissed, but he'll get over it.

I don't get it. If a girl isn't supposed to carry a dinky little pocket knife, why is she trusted with (and expected to use) a 8" chef knife in the kitchen?

I don`t understand people like that.Maybe many people have told him he should not use knives (because of his status as an idiot) and he thinks it goes for his children also.
Poor girl hopefully she already knows his judgement is flawed.

Ridiculous man. Shame on him for perpetuating the 'girls aren't supposed to use sharp things outside the kitchen or know how to repair things because a man will do it for them'.

My father has given me a half dozen knives over the years, none of which have been pink. The most recent one was a lovely Boker Stockman. My first introduction to the wood shop was at the age of six or so, making a bow and arrows. Wooden swords followed (with strict instructions that they were for attacking imaginary creatures, not the porch railings or the nearby alder trees).

Fathers of daughters everywhere; please clue in. We're no longer in the Victorian era. Your daughter does not need another Barbie, or a Bratz doll, or a make-up set for her birthday. Get her a knife. Show her how to repair things with tools. Society does not advance when half of the population is hopelessly dependent on the other for the most basic of tasks, and attitudes towards knives are shaped at a very young age. Education works wonders, particularly understanding how something works.

It's frustrating when 'ARGH! Why are you carrying around a knife!' is screamed loudly when a small, non-locking folder is brought out to cut up an apple, but it's likely due to people like Walmart Guy.

Ugh. Rant over. Carry on.

:thumbup: You got that right! I've been letting my 6 yr old daughter use my LM wave a little bit (with my supervision, of course) to whittle small branches, and stuff like that. She loves it :D

I gave my daughter her first knife when she was about 12 - a nifty little SAK. She's been recently married and was moving a box of stuff out of her room and showed me her first knife (the SAK) and it was so cherry I asked her if she didn't want it, I'd love to have it! :D

I only mentioned that because she's so knifed up it's ridiculous. She has one Beretta Ultralight with about a 3.75 blade and a cool lanyard as her edc and assorted "oh I'll take that one Daddy" knives.

I just gave her a Kershaw G-10 "Needs Work" for cutting open boxes from moving. It's a stout little bugger. She like the straight blade for push cutting the corners of boxes.

All we can do is teach our kids to respect and enjoy one of our favorite tools I suppose. ;)

Do you guys buy everything your kids want when you take them to the store? How many things do you think she asked her daddy to buy her while she was at the store? Kids want everything they see, they dont think long term, they'll play with it for 5 minutes then throw it in the bottom of the drawer and not give it a second thought.

I agree he shouldn't have said that girls dont use knives and i can see how it would make you angry, but would you still be as incensed if he would have simply said "no"? I doubt this incident will stick with her, just like him saying no to her getting a barbie doll or a bicycle will change her mind about wanting one in the future. If she really wants a knife, she ask for one for x-mas or her birthday or something, but chances are as soon as it leaves her sight, she'll forget all about it.

Read the OP. He was stereotyping the knife as not being a suitable for a woman (brain washing) not "quit pestering me dear you already got an XM-18, Sebenza and a ZT 0551 this month, wait for your birthday!"
