Had to cut a guy out of his car tonight

Just missed being in a pretty serious accident. One of the three guys (and three cars) involved had wrenched his back pretty badly and his seatbelt had locked in on him and was uncomfortably tight across his stomach. I asked him if he wanted me to cut the straps so he could get some relief (asked twice).

He said yes so zip zip and life was a bit better for him. To protect his back, he stayed in the car until the medics got there but at least the belt wasn't bugging him any more.

I know the blade ain't sexy but I used my Gerber LST and couldn't have been happier with how quickly and easily it went through the straps. It has a straight edge (no serrations or anything) and is as sharp as I can get it on a DMT diamond stone - sharp enough to shave and cleave seat belts, apparently.

I think my kukri would have just made the poor guy nervous so the Gerber had to do.

The hero...

I feel bad for the poor knifeless slob that had to sit there and wait for help. I don't get people that don't carry a blade.

Good job bro, being able to help out innocent bystanders on occasion is one of the many perks of carrying knives. I've never had to use a knife in any sort of emergency situation but when you need them they can be very handy and sometimes even a matter of life or death. I hope everyone is ok.

I have one of those Gerber LSTs (mid or late '90s I think). They were still making excellent blades then, can make 'em scary, wicked sharp. It's good to hear that it did well with the seat belts. That's a good test for a blade.

Good goin'...

Good job helping that fella!

I bought some seat belt material a while back to see how much of a blade was required to cut it. Turned out that about everything I tried worked as long as the blade was sharp.
440C
420HC
Case Tru-Sharp (soft 420HC)

They all worked fine.

nice!

next time some sheep asks why you carry a knife, you have something irrefutable to tell them.

Two lessons.

1. It's worth carrying a knife for a lifetime for that once or twice you'll need it bad.

2. It does not have to be a big expensive knife.

Great job man!

It's great your one of the smarter ones walking this earth and know enough to carry a EDC of some kind.

Awsome job!
If that crash had been worse, you being able to free him from the car could have ment the difference between life and death.
