Had use folder: Superleaf or Bone collector? Thoughts?

define hard use. If its what most people defijne it to be then Id say neither...

Don't know about hard use, but the Superleaf is a nice knife. Would probably be a good folder to take camping with the thicker, full flat ground, blade and large choil. Too bad they didn't use the orange G10 with it. That would make a nice dealer special, an Elmax blade and orange G10 handles.

Both?

Superleaf first- it will be hard to get soon, its being discontinued. Its one of the spydies I havent managed to get yet. I hear great things about it, especially the ergos

The Bone Collector is a pretty tough knife.

Go on YT and look for the Bone Collector vids by a member here named Marthinus, sold me on the Benchmade.

Chopping/batoning/ basically anything I wouldn't want to risk with my para2, zt etc

Neither will be much good for what you mention. Espesially chopping. Get a fixed blade with a longer blade than those two folders you mention.

I know it's not ideal guys... But I want one of those two and I want a folder.... Just a harder use folder for when the Becker is in the house.

Doesn't really matter then. Both are about the same in toughness. Just get the one you like best.

I know you didnt ask about it, but have you considered the Benchmade Adamas? If I had to do the things you are wanting to do I would use the Adamas before I would consider either of the other two.

You get the same blade steel in a slightly larger, and imo, more robust package.

Specs from BM's site:

ADAMAS
Bade Length: 3.82"
Blade Thickness: 0.160"
Handle Thickness: 0.730"
Blade Material: D2 Tool Steel
Blade Hardness: 60-62HRC
Blade Style: Drop-Point
Weight: 7.70oz.
Pocket Clip: Tip-Up, Reversible
Lock Mechanism: AXIS
Overall Length: 8.70"
Closed Length: 4.88"
Sheath Material: MOLLE® Pouch
Class: Black

BONE COLLECTOR
Blade Length: 3.36"
Blade Thickness: 0.125"
Handle Thickness: 0.735"
Blade Material: D2 Tool Steel
Blade Hardness: 60-62HRC
Blade Style: Drop-Point with Ambidextrous Thumb-Studs
Weight: 5.59oz.
Pocket Clip: Tip-Up, Black Steel, Reversible
Lock Mechanism: AXIS
Overall Length: 8.20"
Closed Length: 4.84"

Now I'm not saying I would personally get a folder to do those tasks BUT in response to your question about a folder the Adamas would be my suggestion.

The Superleaf seems pretty close to the Para2 to me. If I wanted something tougher I would probably go to the Manix 2 XL, or if I was considering other brands I would go to the Benchmade Adamas or to a ZT 0200 or 0560. You mentioned ZT in your response, I didn't know that there was ANY ZT that was not tougher than a Superleaf.

Eh? Manix 2 XL is ground from thinner blade stock, has an arguably "weaker" or less stable lock and is still FFG, right? I'm not sure it'll be tougher...

The SuperLeaf is a tank of a knife and is one of my favorite camping/hiking/yardwork knives. The thing that sets is apart is the ergonomics. It is a large knife, but it handles so well, it doesn't feel like a tank in your hands. In addition, the choil, handles, and spydie-hole are super-sized so the knife is easy to work with gloved hands - very useful in the winter months...

I owned the Bone Collector but gave it away as I already have the 950 Rift and I liked it a lot more. I have the Superleaf still and its a great knife, very sharp and deceptively light. But I would be more inclined to choose my Cold Steel Recon 1 if there is chopping or batoning involved. For safety's sake the Tri-Ad lock is preferred over the compression lock. Plus I find I would rather resharpen AUS 8A than VG-10 after "hard use".

Get the Superleaf now (since it will be harder to find and probably more $$$ down the road) and the bone collector later then you can decide for yourself if you don't want both, or if before getting the bone collector you decide you don't like the superleaf you could probably trade it for a bone collector.

Some people consider the PM2 to be pretty tough, I don't. If the Manix 2 XL isn't any tougher then I'll take it off of my wish list. I read where lots of people say that the Gayle Bradley is a tough knife, it is thinner then the PM2, thinner than the Manix and thinner than the Superleaf.
