When sanding a haft to remove the finish, should you use a sanding block, or can it be done by hand?

Nope, it does not matter.

Just depends on how much time you feel like spending on it.

I scrape all mine, but I have sanded them by using a long thin piece of paper, one end of the haft in a vise or clamped, wrap the paper across top, grab both ends from beneath and pull up and down like buffing a shoe. I scrape them with a pocket knife.......Randy

It's a CS pipe hawk haft, and the finish on it is very thin. In fact it's coming off pretty much on it's own from just handling it. I lucked out. I popped the head off and it's fit pretty nice. Just a little smoothing out and it will be perfect. The eye is pretty nice too. It probably doesn't need any smoothing out really.

I start with a wood rasp I got at a yard sale and take off wood until the head fits right and I have the profile I want. Then I sand, simply by hand, no block or anything. I do it when listening to some music or watching a movie, etc

I just started one yesterday. Painted on a coat of zipp strip stripper, waited 15 minutes, wiped of the finish with a rag and then some steel wool. Fresh wood.
