I have heard that some people have made knives sharp enough to whittle a hair... well I just did it.

My problem is that aside from having hairy arms, my head is bald. I walked in from the shop and asked my wife to yank out one of her hairs. She gave me the normal "you are so strange" look and pulled out one of her hairs.

I then took my newly sharpened knife an whittled a nice curl onto it.

I am so proud.

You make beautiful knives!

Edit: I want to add that it is very rare that a knifemaker ships hair-whittling sharp knives. To them cutting and knife-making are two separate things. They even say that a coarse finish edge cuts better, which I've found to be untrue.

I really like that another knife maker cares how sharp his knives are when they leave the shop. I have got two knives from two different master smith's and both have needed touch up's to make them what I consider sharp.

P.S. when are you going to be accepting orders?

Son of a @#%!@!! I had a long post typed up and lost it because BF took a dump!:mad:

Anyway, suffice it to say this: codt, you're lumping a very large and diverse group of people into "them". Maybe it's all the acraglas fumes I've been breathing, but I see that remark as disparaging of knife makers.

Personally, every knife I ship has a polished edge that will scare the hair off of your arm and filet news print, and many of the knives I've purchased from other makers will do the same. If that's not sharp enough, so be it. Will it filet or treetop the hair off of your arm? Maybe. But that's not my goal in sharpening a knife for a customer. I'd still wager that my knives are sharper than just about any factory knife you can buy.

I guess if I wanted a knife that performed like a straight razor, I'd buy a straight razor.

BTW, Matt, congrats on that hair whittlin' sharp blade! I know it was a thrill when I was able to get a knife to do that! It's definitely fun to do, and some knives just lend themselves to it via their geometry.

Don't mean to put a damper on the original post. Sorry if I did that, I'm in a catankerous mood, I guess. I have nothing against knives that sharp, I just got my panties in a wad about the idea that all knives should do that. Everyone has a right to their personal preferences. I think I should go to bed now. :(

I just acomplished this feat on a d2 slipjoint. I showed my wife and she was like "whatever". I was exited though.

I told my wife i could shave the hair on her legs she said go for it but after a couple times running the blade down her leg she got scared lol
