Of all the Bark River offerings, what is your recommendation for a big hunting knife? Not a utility or general purpose knife, but a BIG HUNTING knife.

Whatever is decided here, I will buy it within the next two months.

This is the first in the "Halbie Buys a Knife" thread. I hope to continue this until funds dry out or my wife kills me. Either way, I'll be happy. :)

My favorite Bark River was the Mountaineer - it fit my hands as well or better than any other knife. Unfortunately, I 'forgot' to buy one when they were still available...

Of their current offerings, I find the Classic Lite Hunter very appealing.

Happy shopping!

I have found that if you go over 4 inches of blade length it is too big for hunting, as in field dressing game. If you want a knife to hunt with Scott Gossman makes great knives. You can't go wrong with his stuff.

OK, but this is specifically a Bark River question. I already have a 4" hunting knife from Fallkniven. Not that I won't look at the site but my "challenge" is for the best Bark River.

Mike Stewart, Bark River CEO, offers a lot of knife designs, best practical large hunter, in my opinion, is the Canadian Special.
But I am also drawn to the traditional styling of the Boone and Boone II, which reminds me of the Ideal knife from Marbles.

Just how big are we talking about ! I just got a "Bay De Noc" and its a beast ! Highly impressed with it !

But going to pair it up with a "Lil Nessie" which is probably more practicle for hunting, lol

In the 4.5" - 7" range. I prefer larger hunting knives, but not crazy large.

I love the Gameskeeper. It is large enough for most camp duties, hefty enough for most, too. Great and safe feel. Natural canvas micarta, while not making it a beauty queen, is highly functional - and just about the most frugal way to get one. The Boone is more recent here - and was my first extravagance - the bocote handle really makes it a looker. As mentioned, it is like a proper currently made Marbles Ideal - more so with the Boone II, if you can find it, as it has a two-sided finger guard.

The Montana Guide is the same as the Gameskeeper - less the finger guard.

Thanks. After looking over the sight, the Gameskeeper is at the top of my list. The Montana is up there, too.

Sorry, I was kinda into the Heinekens pretty good yesterday. I would go with the Montana Guide from BRKT. Bark River makes awesome knives. I have several.

Mike is a moderator on Jerzee Devil and Knife Forums, post a question for him on there (Knife Forums has its own Bark River section). Just be sure to list the qualities you are looking for in the knife, be specific.

My money is on the Woodland Special.

You may want to look at the new Fox River Magnums. An incredible knife to be sure.

The Gameskeeper II would easily fit what you want in a blade as well. The heavy stock at .215" is perfect for splitting even big game joints to quarter and pack out of the field. The Glen Eagle Ax is specifically designed for hunting too. You can choke up on it for skinning and split joints and pelvic bones with it.

Northwoods Knives is now the factory show room for Bark River Knife and Tool. We have about 40 different knives in stock. Check our web site at: Northwoodsknives.com

The Canadian Camp or the Gameskeeper II.
