I would thouroughly recommend it. Get up early and be on the trail by first light. I did it in early October a few years ago. Perfect time of the year. The weather is good, not as crowded although still more crowded than I like.
I would recommend taking the trail up past the falls and returning down the longer but not as steep route. Once you make it up to the top of the falls the trail definitely mellows out, but is still a good hike. Bring a lunch as you'll want to spend at least an hour up on top. Also bring your own gloves.
I brought a sling and carabiner to wrap around me on the cables. You don't really need it, but some people lock up and I'd hate to be taken out by someone on that... The sling also work well so I could hook in to the cables, lean out and take some good shots.
