Amazing how lopsided this is. I had no idea so many prefer half stops. No wonder a lot of knives have this feature. Switching back and forth I have to remind myself, specifically when I grab my 55. The spring is very strong and the liner lock adds another element. So far so good but been real close a few times.

I tend to pinch the blade pretty good when closing. I'm not sure the spring has ever bothered me as long as I'm mindful to handle it that way.

Most of my traditional knives have half stops, so I'm used to them. I have never made a knife purchase decision based on whether or not a knife has half stops.

Since I collect the peanut pattern I expect to have a half stop. I halfway expect to see them on every knife I acquire but that aint gonna happen.

My vote goes for no difference since it has never affected what I choose to purchase or carry. If it were an option, I'd go with a cam tang over the half stop. There's just something about a properly executed cam tang with a nice smooth pull and a solid snap at the end that's very satisfying.

I'm not that keen on them, I like a smooth opening. Many of the GEC patterns without them 33, 66, 68, 57 Half whitt, 56 are amongst my favourites- unsurprisingly. Certainly not a deal-breaker though, so it doesn't really make a difference.

I recently got my first knife with half stops, a Colt teardrop jack. It has a firm pull as well.
I like it overall, imparts a feeling of quality to the knife. I'd say I lean towards "prefer".

I like them on some knives, but it's not a dealbreaker to have them or not. There are certain knives that work very well with half stops, and you grow to expect them on these patterns, but really if a knife has good spring tension and walk, you don't really think about it.

I have begun to appreciate them with exceptionally strong backsprings. No need for them on such things as a typical SAK or knives sprung with similar ease of use.

Like many people here, I like them, but half-stops (or lack of them) aren't a deal-breaker for me.

I prefer half stops, but not so much that it would influence my decision to buy or not. I just like them so I can reposition my fingers when closing. I almost always use my palm to close the blade to the half stop, then pinch it closed slower from there.

Also this is probably just my own bias, but does anyone else feel like knives with half stops have better, crisper snap? Obviously not all the time, but everything else being equal it seems like the abrupt stop and start helps blades from becoming "sluggish" with age. But I love em all :)

I would have to agree. I own both and prefer the half stops.

Fan or not?

Is it a deal breaker one way or the other?

Personally I go back and forth. I dont mind either way and it has no bearing on what I buy. Though I will say it influences my edc choice somedays.

I've got a hitch in my giddy-up when it comes to the poll choices. I prefer smooth cambers (no half stops), but I wouldn't go so far as to say "I do not like half stops." Neither would I say it "makes no difference most of the time."

So there! (There's [at least] one in every crowd, right?!) :p

I tend to forget how much I prefer smooth cambers until I pick up a knife with the same; the feeling of happy surprise and relief is palpable (aaahhhhhhhh). This recently happened again with my #66s, a Harness Jack and a Calf Roper. Meaning, I admire half stops, I like them just fine, I get used to them, I don't shy away from them, BUT: I prefer t'other.

Like this:

I'm also taking notes here:
One habit I have developed is to cycle a knife open and closed a few times when I pocket it, to remind myself of the particular action of that knife.

What a concept! That'll save me some surprises going forward. Though happy surprises are always welcome. :)

My apologies for the lack of options in this poll. It is rather tilted but then again it seams that the good majority like some half stops :). My next poll (coming soon) will have a plethora of options.

I also like sitflyers suggestion. Makes since and it also gives you a chance to check out your edc for the day before you leave the house. On the off chance its dull or damaged you are in a position to select another.
